Nobody would even know where to come looking for us. That made me feel just great.
I didn't want to go any farther.But now to get out? Crawling backward wasn't so easy. And Hazel was still up ahead.I couldn't leave her.
Finally I came to where the tunnel opened out into a place where I could stand up.
I shined the flashlight into the darkness . I couldn't see Hazel. I couldn't see much of anything.
I walked a few steps forward.Suddenly someone grabbed me!
I screamed .
Hazel laughed
"A little nervous, hey,partner ?"she said.She chuckled. She.She 'd been hiding back in a hollow in the wall.
"I knew it was you"
"Sure you did.Do you know where we are?.This is a mine shaft.Its like I thought . They dug a tunnel from your house to here as a secret escape route . I'm sure it was outlaws. This is really neat"
"But there's nothing here,"I said
"we have to explore .Maybe we'll find the loot from a big bank robbery "
We started to walk. Every few yards there were old timber supports holding up the ceiling.Around the corner we came to a place where the tunnel branched off in three directions . I pointed the flashlight down each of them . All you could see was dirt walls and more darkness. Which way to go?
"Lets try this one,"Hazel said.
"But how will we know how to get back?"I asked
"Simple.When we get to this point,we turn left ,I mean , right"
That's pretty smart , Max."she said
"thanks"
we hadn't gone ten feet ahead when we heard a sudden fluttering sound behind us.It got closer and closer.
I ducked down . Hazel ran off into the darkness, screaming at the top of her lungs.
I ran after her. When I caught up she was crouching by the wall and looked real scared
"What was it?"I said
"Bats!!"she shouted " I cant stand bats . They get into your hair and they have teeth like vampires."
"I'll walk ahead and scare them away,"I said
The bats have actually come from behind us, but I didn't mention but that.I led the way down the mine shaft.
Farther along, the shaft became wider. The ceiling was higher , too . We were standing in a big room.
"What do you see?"Hazel asked
"I don't know what it is . Boxes, I think."
"Boxes!! " she was excited . "It could be boxes of treasure or loot. Maybe this is where they stored all the money they robbed from the banks and stage coaches."
The boxes were long and narrow, long enough for a person to lie down in. They were very old , covered with all kinds of dust and cobwebs .
"This is weird ,"I said "there's so many of them . You know what they look like?"
"What?"Hazel asked.
"Coffins! We're in the middle of a whole bunch of dead people. "
At the same moment something even weirder happen. A bright light suddenly shone on us from above . What was going on?
