Destiny
Prologue
--------------
The five year old girl in white shorts and a blue Mickey Mouse shirt scooped up more sand and put it in her yellow pail. Her parents were sitting a bit away but monitoring her as they talked to the parents of the girl beside her. The other girl was wearing a pink summer dress, which was perfect for their family time at the beach. The two families were neighbors and their daughters were the best of friends; they played together everyday, especially during the summer. On special occasions, their parents would bring them both to the beach where they would make sand castles and play in the water.
The girl in the pink dress took in a deep sigh as she drew mindlessly in the sand with her finger.
â??Sica! Letâ??s make a sand castle!â? said the girl in the Mickey Mouse shirt.
Sica turned and looked at her while puffing up her cheeks.
â??I donâ??t feel like making a sand castle, Yuri,â? she whined.
â??Why not?â? Yuri whined back.
â??Because I donâ??t want to.â?
Little Yuri did not know how to respond to that and decided to just make the sand castle herself as she continued to pour sand into the yellow pail in silence. She was actually enjoying herself even though she was playing alone. Just being with Jessica made her happy enough.
â??Yuri?â?
â??Hmm?â? Yuriâ??s tongue was sticking out as she poured in more sand.
â??My mommy and daddy said that weâ??re moving to America.â?
Yuri stopped what she was doing and turned to look at Jessica. â??You mean, that place at the other side of the ocean?â? asked Yuri as she pointed towards the water.
â??I donâ??t know but itâ??s really far! We have to ride a plane!â? said Jessica excitedly.
â??Really? Iâ??ve never been on a plane before!â?
â??Me too, but Iâ??m going to ride in one!â?
â??When?â?
â??Tomorrow.â?
â??Bring me too! I want to ride in a plane!â?
â??I canâ??t. I asked my mommy if we can bring you already and she said no. She said that our family is going to move there and we wonâ??t be back for a long time.â?
Yuri paused for a couple of seconds. â??That means that we canâ??t play together anymore.â?
Jessicaâ??s face became sad. â??Thatâ??s what my mommy said too.â?
The two girls became silent as they realized that they might not see each other again.
â??But, I donâ??t want you to go,â? said Yuri quietly. â??Youâ??re my best friend.â?
â??Thatâ??s what I told my mommy! I said that I wanted to stay here with you but she said no.â? Jessica then looked down as she finished her sentence.
Silence took over the two girls again as the water gave a big wave and reached their bare feet.
â??Jessica, princess! Letâ??s go home now!â? called one of the dads.
â??Yuri-ya! Letâ??s go home now too!â? called the other.
The two girls looked at each other.
â??You have to promise that youâ??ll come back!â? said Yuri.
â??Okay! I promise!â?
The two girls promised with their pinkies and thumbs.
