Good Night, Moon

“Rin.” The voice next to my ear made me jump a little, sending a shock down my spine. “Jesus Christ Nicky.” I swore. Nicky laughed. “Whatcha doin'? You've been staring out that window for a while.” I glanced back at man sitting on our mini-couch. He wasn't paying attention, absorbed in some television show where people were shooting at something. Each other. Bears. Who knew. I turned back to Nicolette, a gave her a look. That look we both recognized immediately. She narrowed her eyes towards the window. “It's gone now.” I informed her.

“What was it?” I shrugged, “Shadow.” She shook her head. “It's fine now. Whatever.”

But it wasn't whatever. It had an edge around it- a glowing blue. Blue on black? That was something new to me. Something kept my mouth shut though, I'd tell Nicky about the blue later maybe. Maybe. Nicolette got up and went back to sit with her Love Interest. I focused on the TV, putting the memory of the shadow being out of my mind. It was irrelevant now.

Getting up is the funnest part, sitting down and then getting up slowly, or quickly, it doesn't matter. It's a rush, it's a head rush, it's a dizziness that keeps you glued to the earth. I would be tripping until I passed out. Spinning in a few circles, I stumbled over to the desk. It was beautiful, wooden old, found on a street curb. I smiled. The stacks of papers seemed to reach up to the ceiling. I felt the urge to clean it, but all the papers were blurred, I couldn't tell them apart. One sheet stood out to me. The whiteness of it screamed out at my eyes. Black ink lettering read, “It's Never Over” I wondered what I meant. Slumping down against the desk, I closed my eyes. “Weeeee.” I whispered to myself, with half sarcasm. Nicky and Irish Man didn't notice, they were too busy converting a Marlboro Black for illegal use. Tap, tap, tap. Tobacco fell out onto the coffee table's glass surface. Everything felt right, in this moment. I was with my family, I was safe, at home. Comfortable with my place in the world, I passed out.
