My name is Jack, and I'll tell you about the night my friend Mathew and I stayed in an abandoned house. This is how it began.
Mathew and I were leaving school, he asked his parents if I could stay the night, they said," yes dear, whatever makes you happy". Mathew's parents don't really care for him, they say their lives would be easier if he weren't around. I was able to see the pain in Mathew's eyes those soft blue eyes of his looked glassy as though he were gonna break down any minute, and the hunch in his back shows clearly through his purple shirt. He dragged his shoes across the ground when he walked, with the flap of his rugged jeans blowing behind him almost as if it were trying to leave his body.
Mathew and I walked until we got to the town park. Then Mathew said, "ok Jack, call your parents see if you could stay the night". I just replied with a simple, "ok". When I pulled out my phone it was a small dark screen, I had to turn up the brightness so I could see. I dialed my dads phone number it rang, rang, and rang until he finally picked up. I asked, "can I stay the night at Mathews"? My dad replied with as long as it's okay with your mom. So I called my mom, I asked her if I could stay the night at Mathew's she said, "sure honey make sure to be back home by noon tomorrow".
I turned to Mathew and said, "I can stay the night". Mathew got all excited, his eyes filled with joy. I have no idea how his parents can be so rude to him with those bright blue eyes looking at me I suddenly felt a sense of hope from him. Mathew continued to say, "we'll probably do a lot of things like play video games, eat chips, and drink soda". You know in a way both Mathew and I have similar lives, I mean how both our parents are too busy focusing on their jobs to notice us, this life isn't the best, knowing that I am the oldest so in a way I have to help out and be a parent, while Mathew just has straight up bad parents who pay no attention to him what-so-ever . I started spacing out thinking about what Mathew's life was like and what mine was like in a way I feel for him cause it gets lonely with no parents not knowing what to do in certain situations cause on both ends neither parent is there all of a sudden I hear a noise like 2 fingers snapping. everything went blurry and came back in focus. When everything got clear again I saw Mathew snapping his fingers and saying, " Jack u there? Earth to jack." I come back to reality and I shake it off, and respond with, "ya I'm here, I need to go home to pack, I'll see you later."
The walk home was like walking down an alley, dark, cold, and very silent, but I couldn't stop thinking about how Mathew and I have similar lives and yet how we can be different too almost like a sense of nostalgia. I come back too and I'm standing outside my house where there's a nice red door and the stairs I have to take to get to the door, walking up the stairs I see the bed of roses my mom and dad took an entire day to plant, I get to the door and reach in my pocket and grab the key out I unlock the door and when I walk inside I realize nobody is even home. I walk up the stairs to my room passing by the hallway where pictures are hung each one to a different place there's the one to San Francisco on the bay, Santa Cruz, and even Disney playland in Florida, when I get into my room it looks the same as I left it in the morning, the reason I say this is because my little brother always messes things up in my room for the thrill of it, which gets really irritating seeing him giggle as I get in trouble with his little malicious look on his face.
I started getting my stuff together for the sleepover, I got my toothbrush, a compass, my phone charger, $20, sleeping bag, and a flashlight. Once I got all of my stuff together my little brother gets home, and let's just say all hell broke loose. He started complaining about me not going to his school to pick him up. I told him, "you are getting older I'm not always gonna be there for you plus I'm staying the night at Matthew's, and I had to get my stuff together". He says, "well, when I'll tell Mom and Dad your going to be in so much trouble". Right then I was thinking about how little kids were so funny, always being tattletale brats.
Then he went into some childish rant about school and saying how he needs help with his homework. I told him, "I can help you with your homework". He said , "yay"! When he gets out his homework he says that he needs help with number 4, so I took the paper and looked at number 4 and it was: what's the answer to 4x8, at that moment I was thinking about how pathetic that is, then I remembered he was only in 2nd grade. I asked him, "what's 16 + 16"? It took him a moment but the He said, "it's 32". And I asked him, "then what do you think the answer is to 4x8"? I started thinking about how time flies, because it seemed like it was just yesterday I was learning the same thing.
When my Dad walked in the door he said, "hi guys". Smiling and looking happy. Nate says, " Dad jack didn't come to my school today to pick me up". My Dad smiled and replied, "Nate your getting older and you can walk home by yourself Jack doesn't always need to pick you up". Nate said with a sad look on his face, "okay". Then my Dad asked, "what homework do you have"? Nate replied in an upbeat mood, "Jack helped me finish my homework so I don't have any more homework". Right after that my Mom walks in the door and says, "hi guys', how was your day"? I replied, " it was good, how was your day". She said, "it was okay for me, I mean it's not like I won a million dollars". I replied, "money doesn't always make you happy, because the stuff you need in life are the things money can't buy".
At around 6:50 I get my stuff together, and I say, "Mom, Dad I'm going over to Matthew's for the sleepover, they both say in unison okay have fun. My Mom said, "make sure to be back by noon tomorrow". I reply, "okay, I'll be back by noon tomorrow".
