I can't believe I'm doing this... I thought to myself as I tried to figure out how to say this. I mean, he would just forget once it reset, right?... Or maybe he won't... Maybe, if I explain them to him, he'll remember, I theorized, but if he remembers, how would he react? I mean, the human would come sometime around noon or so, what would he do? Ah, too late now. I thought to myself.
"jeez sans, what have you gotten yourself into..." I mumbled to myself, "ok, I guess to start, I have to ask you to not freak out as I explain, I don't know how you'll take this."
"Why would I freak out?" Papyrus questioned.
"because," I took a breath to prepare myself, "I'm gonna explain something that you probably won't like."
He nodded to show he understood and thought he was prepared. "ok, let me start with me explaining a timeline. As the name implies, it is a line that grows as time progresses, and each time someone makes a choice it branches off to make another connected timeline. There are infinite amounts of timelines, each with either minor changes, such as me sitting a little more to the right, or major changes, such as us deciding to live in Hotland instead of Snowdin. Did you understand everything I said?"
He nodded, "I understand."
"good," I said as I took a deep breath, "time for some complicated stuff."
"now," I started, "let me explain our timeline's problem, there is a human that falls into the underground and shapes our timeline as they see fit, for good or bad. This human is able to save, load, and reset. If the human saves, it adds a checkpoint that they're able to go back to if they die, or use their load ability to go back to a save point at anytime. then, there's a reset. A reset allows them to go back to the time and place that they fell, allowing them to do everything again in different ways. After a reset, all monsters with regular determination will have a sense of deja vu, while monsters with higher determination will have nightmares or dreams of past resets, and some with unusually high determination will remember the reset clearly, a True Reset alters the rules, it erases the memories of anyone and everyone no matter the amount of determination. Unfortunately skeletons have high determination so they get dreams, while others can remember resets," I took a deep breath as I finished, "did you understand all that?"
"I understand, but how do you know all of this?" he asked.
"w-well, uhhhh," I stammered, crap. I thought to myself, I guess there's no avoiding it. " sigh I guess I can't avoid this, I'll tell you the truth," I said somberly, "I can remember resets."
"YOU CAN!!!???" Papyrus exclaimed excitedly, "You should have told me in your super long explanation! I have so many questions, how many resets have we been through? What does the human do? What does the human look like? What's their name? Do I get in the Royal guard? What's a reset li-"
"ok, ok, one at a time!" I said as I chuckled, "I lost count at 25, it depend on the reset, but they either kill everyone, kill one or two people, or set us free, depends on what they do, depends on the ending, but yes, when the world resets the world crumbles away and we fall into a black pit, only to wake up like nothing happened. Any more?" I said as I counted off each question with my fingers.
"Just one," he said, "Are these 'resets' why you're depressed?"
Those words hit me like a slap to the face as my eyelights disappeared, how did he know? For how long?
"I knew it," Papyrus confirmed, "I'm more observant then you think apparently."
"heh," I chuckled sadly, "nah, I knew you'd catch on at some point, just surprised me is all," I said as I sunk into my seat, head in my crossed arms on the table, my eye lights still gone as Papyrus looked at me sadly. "yeah, but I've been depressed since before the human, when another being had the power to reset," I explained.
"So, resets have been happening for a long time?" Papyrus questioned.
"they've been happening for a VERY long time, so long that it's almost hard to remember back to when we where kids... Heh," I answered with a sad chuckle at the end.
"I only have one more question," He said, "Why did you think I'd freak out from your explanation?"
I looked up at him from my arms, my eye lights finally returning, "I didn't know how you'd react, so I prepared for the worst."
Papyrus gave me a look, I couldn't understand what it meant. Looking back, I guess it was a 'You really need to calm down' look, and said, "How does this explain my dream?"
I sighed, this is the part where I break down. I thought as I said, "your dream was probably a memory of the last reset," I breathed in as I forced myself to remember the time where I lost him, "it was a genocide timeline, I watched from a nearby tree as the human walked towards you, a pink leather glove on their hand, dust thick in the air. You tried to reason with them, offering friend ship and a hug, but they refused," I practically spat out the last three words in the sentence, hands clenching into fists on the table.
"they ran up to you, punching your head clean off your shoulders and crushing your skull into dust as you tried to help them, one last time. All that remained was your scarf," I told him somberly, tears threatening to fall as I finished. When I looked up, I saw that Papyrus was starting to tear up as well.
"I remember..." he muttered, causing me to flinch, "I remember everything, even things I shouldn't, like following you to the judgement hall, as some sort of ghost. I remember Undyne, fighting and falling, Mettaton doing what he could, and you. Trying your best to stop the human..." tears where flowing freely down both of our skulls, bright orange on his, and sky blue on mine.
I did the first thing that came to mind. I got up, walked around the table, and hugged him. It felt like the burden I was carrying for years, was finally lifted. I felt happy, truly happy.
