Chapter I
There in a dark hospital room sat a woman, screaming in pain, then it went silent. She gasped and there was a different scream, a scream of life. Little did she know that with life, there is always death. She heard a voice saying "it's a girl." but she wasn't listening. It was then she knew she didn't have long. With her breathing slowing, and air decreased, she told the doctor with a shaky breath, as she tried to whisper the last things she would say to her child. "Give her to me," the doctor took the baby wrapped up in a little pink blanket to her mom, a mom she would never get to know.
The woman who's name was Marci, held her baby girl close. While her breathing was slowing at a rapid pace. "Fuyu," She said "Her name is Fuyu." With the last minutes Marci had with Fuyu, She told the doctor to find her child a good home, and to let her daughter know the truth, how much her mother loved her. She also told the doctor how special Fuyu was, and that she had a purpose in this world that only she could do. When the doctor asked "Why Fuyu?" Marci said "She is winter, she is sweet as sugar, cold as ice, hurt her once, and you won't live past the night." "Why Fuyu though? What about Abby? Lulu? Ella? Pete? for gosh sake? Why pick Fuyu?" "Because, she is winter, Fuyu means winter, I am trusting you with my baby's life." She coughed loudly, and spit up blood before continuing."I am trusting you, don't make me regret it. She will understand."
Not long after Marci died with Fuyu in her arms, a motherless child, painfully alone until the day she gets adopted. The doctor let Fuyu mourn for her mother for awhile longer. After delaying the inevitable for as long as he could, he took Fuyu away and confirmed Marci's death by covering her with the white linen cloth, that always haunted him at night, that signaled his failure to save the people who didn't deserve to die. But he had to respect death, for it comes in many ways, shapes, and forms. Doctor Blankinship was by no means a religious man, but he did believe in a better place for the good people in this world that always got the worst.
By the time Adam (Doctor Blankinship)got done checking Fuyu's pulse, vitals, all that what-not, he noticed something peculiar, strangely peculiar. Fuyu was pink, like she should be, but she was cold. Cold like ice, cold like,.....like winter. She was at least ten degrees colder than all the babies he'd ever delivered, and he's delivered some cold babies. He decided to dismiss that thought, there was no way this thing, this little girl had anything to do with winter. Which reminded him, he had to call Mark and tell him that there's a body that needs to be taken to the morgue. "What day was it again? Oh yeah, it's Christmas eve, it's Christmas eve. Adam, you stop it right there mister, it's just a coincidence she was born today." Needing a distraction he put the sleeping baby in it's bassinet (well the hospitals bassinet) and took his I phone 3 g.s. out of his pocket and called Mark.
He answered on the fifth ring. "Man this better be good, it's Christmas eve you nut."
Adam didn't say anything for a moment "You know I wouldn't call unless I needed you, how's the wife?"
"Aww Adam, who died? The wife's good by the way. When are you going to marry someone?" He asked
"Marci Aloysius, my high school sweetheart, you know the one that didn't know I existed. She didn't even know my name, she still doesn't......didn't I mean." he sighed "I just don't know what to do man."
"Stuff her in the morgue man, get on with your life, it's not like you killed her. Wait why was she at the hospital tonight? Isn't it closed? Damn it man, you delivered her kid didn't you?" He asked
"Would it be lying if I said No?" He asked hopefully
"Depends, did you?" He asked equally hopeful as Adam was
He huffed "Yeah Mark I did, but I didn't know that she was dying, dude I swear. Hell if I knew I wouldn't of came ten feet close to her and Fuyu." he hurried to say, inhaling and exhaling, as he waited to hear Mark's reply.
"Fuyu? What the hell, was she high when she named the it?" He asked
"No man, have some respect for the dead. Fuyu means winter, I guess she wanted the kid's name to have meaning. Fuyu didn't even get to have a middle name." he replied bitterly
"Is it a boy?" he asked engrossed in what Adam was saying
"No it's a girl, Fuyu.......I've got nothin' how am I supposed to give a kid with that kind of first name an equal middle name. It's not like I can call it Fuyu Jane, or Fuyu Pebbles. What am I supposed to do?"
"Hey man, the wife wants a word with you." he snickered
"What, do you know something I don't?" asking agitatedly
"Adam. Randall. Joseph. Blankinship. Did you just.....Oh never mind tell me you dilemma." she told him venomously
"Yes Ma'am," he said while saluting to no one.
