Melanie creped down the stairs quietly, hoping not to disturb her drunken mother.

She yanked her school shirt off the kitchen table and quickly buttoned it up. She picked up her skirt and slipped it over her scarred thighs. Melanie pulled up her knee high socks as high as possible, trying to cover up yesterdays fresh bruise.

Running round the house, she grabbed her text nooks and pens and shoved them into her bag.

"Melanieeeee!", screeched her mother, " Get your scrawny arse up these stairs right now!"

Melanie panicked as she raced upstairs.

"Yes mother" she whispered, in a shakey voice.

"You know what happened last night,"

"Yes mother" she whispered again.

"Don't go telling any of your friends at school, will ya. Especially the nosy, stuck up blonde one. I don't like 'er. Ya' should never trust a blonde."

Melanie instinctively tousled the ends of her hair.

"Okay mother" she muttered and left the house with a melancholy expression, painted on her face.
