She lay on her back, drifting in the ocean, watching the sky turn orange.

She knew it was stupid and mental of her to still be in the water during sunset. After all, weren't there sharks around? She knew she couldn't afford the risk of being gone too soon, who would take care of her siblings? Heaven knows that her mother, in the state she was in, couldn't look after them and her father made clear his dislike when he left them a year ago.

However, she needed this quiet moment to think, and what better way to ponder than being surrounded by nature?

Okay. She could've just taken a hot bath, or she could've gone for a stroll along the beach. That was safer. No one said she had to actually go IN the water.

But then again, she has always been calmed by the waves. And right now, that was what she needed to do. She needed to calm herself down before she snapped.

She let out a sigh and watched a bird fly overhead. She envied its freedom, the way it could just fly around and do whatever it wanted, so unlike her at the moment. She felt like a bird---a caged one at that; caged by her own will to do what was right and her selflessness.

The truth was, she could just take off any time she wanted to. No one was stopping her. All she had to do was pack her bags and never look back. It was that easy. Deep down inside, however, she wouldn't be able to forgive herself had she done that. So, she opted for the more difficult road, and that was to take care of her and her siblings herself. She continued her studies, yes, but she also took on several jobs to provide income for the family. However, juggling her work, studies, household matters and her siblings, she was bound to get exhausted once in a while, and this was her release.

Turning over, she started swimming back to the shore. She still had to prepare dinner and help them clean up afterwards. And after that, it would be the same routine all over again.

But she never stopped hoping.

She never stopped hoping that someday, this exhausting cycle would end; and she could finally--FINALLY, start living her life.
