CHAPTER EIGHT
My heart leaped. A team to go to the humans' lands? Perhaps this was my chance, the chance I had been waiting for my whole life. "Who have they chosen?"
Lorla shrugged her shoulders. "I don't know, Brey. I heard it from Groff. He can be daft sneaky at times. But, I had to tell you because..."
"Because why?" I asked, my voice low.
Lorls looked around as if checking to make sure noone was listening. "Because..."
"Because they were talking about you," Groff said. "They mentioned your name in their conversation. You might be chosen to go, Brey. You might be the first ever Slayer to leave Grave before they are of age."
My head was spinning so fast. I might be chosen. I might get to leave Grave. I might get to see the humans' lands and go on a true adventure. I would be the first underage Slayer to leave our island. The Synod was talking about me, wondering if I would be the right choice to make. Was I the right choice? I believed I was, but I had to prove it to them, one way or another. I had to show them that I was, not just the right choice, but the best choice, the only logical choice.
Who would go with me? I wondered if any of my friends would be chosen. Would Jasy or Nettie or Brilly or Crem be chosen? How about Groff and Klei and Newn? I knew the Synod favored Lorla, and clearly she had experience. She would be a smart choice. But would I go with any of them?
Just the thought of leaving Grave made me happy. "When will this team be decided?" I asked, a smile on my face.
"I do not know," Groff said. "I only heard part of the conversation. But I would guess soon. I wonder who will be chosen. It will be exciting, will it not?"
The rest of the Morning meal, we discussed who we thought might get chosen. Lorla and I were the top picks by the others at our table. I was flattered, and I could tell Lorla was too. Now, I just needed to be chosen by the Synod. That would be the difficult part too, being chosen by the Synod. Not that they were hard to please, but it was hard to catch their eye.
I trained with Jasy again after the Morning Meal. I had to admit, she was getting better and better every day. I could still beat her easily, but she did pose more of a threat to me than most others did. On the off chance when she fought someone else, she almost always won. She was good. I hoped for her sake that she would be chosen to join the team. She would be great, I just knew it.
The Synod came, once again, to our training session. They did not just watch me, though. They also watched others. About half way through the morning, they left and did not return the rest of the day. I found it strange. But, I did know the Synod was busy.
"I wonder where they were going," Jasy said as we walked to the Evening Meal.
"They probably just got tired of watching me fight day after day. I know I would get bored if it were me."
"O, stop it," Jasy said, pushing me slightly. "Noone could get bored of watching you. That is what is so strange. They were not just watching you today. They watched others as well. They looked thoughtful, like they were looking for something. Or someone, maybe."
I didn't respond.
"Do you think they are trying to assemble the team? They could be scouting each training session, Brey. That is why they left. They had others to watch too. Do you think so?"
I wasn't sure. If they were indeed creating a team, that would make sense, but that was all just hearsay and Slayers did not head any of it. Why then did I wonder about it instead of train? Why then was it constantly on my mind? I supposed it could have been because I had hope. I had the hope that I would venture from Grave and make my mark on the humans' lands and in Slayer history. I supposed it was because I had always wanted it and now, if it was true, my dream would finally come true, not more dreaming about it at night.
"It is possible," I said.
Silence hovered in the air as we walked. I knew she was thinking about the possibility of going from Grave. It was in my mind too. How could it not be? It was all we had ever trained for. It was all every Slayer ever wanted.
"They will choose you," she finally said.
I smiled. "They will choose you. Jasy, it is a team. We may just go together."
Now it was Jasy's turn to smile. "That would be wonderful, would it not Brey? Leaving Grave together and returning with fantastic stories from the humans' lands for all to hear. Oh, Brey, how wonderful that would be. To not only venture from Grave, but to venture together."
"And everyone would want to hear about Jasy the Great, and how she was brave, caring, and smarter than any other Slayer."
Jasy laughed. "Then, when you stopped feeding them lies, they would want to hear of Brey the Magnificent and how he was the strongest, fastest, and best Slayer ever to step foot on Grave."
We both laughed. "And how Jasy outsmarted all the humans."
"And how Brey annialated any human that was a threat to Grave."
Jasy smiled and I smiled back. "You know," I said, "we have to get chosen first. We have to be picked by the Synod. That will not be easy, you know."
"You will be chosen," she said. "You will be chosen, Brey."
As we entered the Great Hall, I tried to believe it true, but the more I thought about the Synod's team, the more I began to think I would never get chosen. I do not know why, it was just a feeling.
