"Don't forget, Dad is picking you up tonight." My mom's voice rang through my head, as I sat on the front steps of my school. Maria ran past me. "Happy Birthday!" She shouted, as she disappeared into her mom's car. 'Best birthday ever.' I thought to myself. 'Just waitin' for my always late Dad.' Mrs. Ronalds came out and sat by me.
"Last one again?"
"Dad's supposed to come, because it's my birthday."
"Your mom just called, and said he was on his way."
"Ok." I looked up, and saw him pulling into the drive of the school. "There he is." I said, pointing at his silver jeta.
"Ok, well have a good weekend Kayla!"
"I will, thanks for waiting with me Mrs. Rolands."
"Your welcome dear." I stood up, and walked over to my dad's car. He leaned over, and flung the door open as I approached him. I got in, and threw my pink back pack into the back seat.
"Happy birthday, Kayla."
"Thanks Dad."
"Why so sad?"
"You were late again!"
"By like ten minutes."
"I was the last one!"
"Ok, I am sorry. There was a good reason though."
"What is it?"
"It's a surprise." I let out a big sigh, and sort of threw myself into the seat for dramatic affect.
"Not telling you!" My dad said laughing at my fake fight.
"Meanie!"
"Nope!" We pulled into the driveway, and I leapt out of the car. "Do I have to call the tickle monster?"
"Dad! I'm eight, not five!"
"So?" He said coming around the car and grabbing me. He picked me up, and tossed me over his shoulder. He put my down in the entryway, and told me to go change. "Put on some grubbers, and meet me back down here."
When I finally came back down, in a black pair of sweat pants and a red race track t-shirt, I was greeted by Mom, Dad, Kimmi, and her boyfriend Kyle. "Kimmi!" I shouted. It had been about a month or more since I had seen my older sister. I gave both her and Kyle a hug, and then looked at Dad.
"Ok, go get in the truck."
"Blind fold."
"Oh ya." Dad handed me a blind fold, and when I got in the truck I put it on. I sat in the truck alone for about five minutes. I heard someone get in, and then the door slam.
"Dad?" I asked.
"Yup, it's me."
"Are we going alone?"
"Ya, this is going to be a daddy and me birthday gift."
"Ok." I sat there, racking my brains on what it could be. "What is it?" I asked impatiently.
"I told you, it is a surprise." My dad said mischievously, as he took a right turn.
"Please, Daddy?" I begged.
"Nope!" Dad said, and I could hear him start to grin.
"But Daddy!" I said, starting to whine.
"But nothing, Kayla." I groaned, knowing I wasn't going to win.
"Can we at least listen to the radio?" I asked, hoping for a distraction.
"Sure." He said, as he must've leaned forward and pushed the power button to the radio. I sat there, music pouring into my ears. I began to sing, and I took care not to be good at it. Dad started to chuckle, and slowly I leaned over to him.
