Chapter 4

I see Maya and Sara waving me over from their seats. They are clutching their bags in their cold hands. A man walks up to the front of the room. He is signaling for everyone to sit down and be quiet. The noisy chatter immediately stops. It's just a normal day at school. But I am not at school, I am at a church for a funeral. Today is the day of Spencer's funeral.

Maya and Sara don't want me sitting in the desk next to them. They are signaling me to come sit on the same hard, wooden bench as them. They are clutching their purses not their backpacks. That man is not our teacher. He is Mr. Johnson asking everyone to be quiet. The chatter is not gossip. The chatter is people saying "My condolences" or " I'm sorry for your loss". The music begins. It has begun.

We all sing Amazing Grace. The entire room is filled with singing. Between every line you can hear the sniffles of everyone holding back tears. I'm not even trying. I let every drop of pain and sadness fall from my eyes. No one stares at me. They understand. They understand the guilt of when I could've opened the door. They understand the loneliness of a true friend gone forever. They understand the desperate hope of Spencer waking up. Of course that's a lost dream.

From my seat I can just barely see Spencer's body in the casket which has been left open due to family request. Her body is pale. There is no smile glowing on her face. Her hair perfectly brushed and styled. I can just see her nails shaped and painted an emerald green. Her favourite colour. She looks beautiful dressed in what appears to be a princess pink dress. Then it hits me. That was the dress she wanted for prom.

She dreamed of Milo dancing with her under the disco ball. It would be to an Adele song with the lights twinkling on the ground. Then Milo would twirl her, letting her dress float around her. She would giggle, inspiring a soft look in his eyes. He would hold her tight, lean in ever so slowly and finish it off with a delicate kiss. A warmth would spread through her body. That would be when they noticed true love, that they were soul mates. They would live happily ever after and have two children. She planned that night out since even before I met her. That will never happen.

I scour the room. Is Milo here? Of course not, he never knew. Who is? Spencer's family, Maya, Sara, concerned neighbours, a representative from the school, Lucy Snow- wait what? Spencer hated Lucy Snow and the feeling was mutual. Spencer felt that Lucy should be sent to Antarctica and left there.

It all started when Lucy replaced Spencer's shampoo with glue at teamwork camp in freshman year. It was a simple prank. Spencer's hair was a mess. Apparently it wouldn't come out. Her hair was one clump on top of her hair. Spencer had to cut it short and grow it out. Everyone laughed it was a joke. Spencer didn't think so. She set out for revenge. Later that year, revenge was served.

It was the school musical. Peter Pan to be exact. Lucy played tinker bell with Jacob Maxwell as the director. Jacob was doing the musical only to get out of detention. So it was normal for him to schedule practices and auditions in weird places. He would always text the cast an hour before practice to reveal the scheduled place. Luckily, the bad boy Jacob Maxwell was very forgetful. When he left his phone on his desk, Spencer snuck the phone into her pocket and texted Lucy Snow.

One hour later, Lucy arrived at the "place", café Jo. Spencer dressed up as Jacob in a black hoodie and pants with her face hidden. She motioned for Lucy to enter the back room. Lucy walked in and the door shut. Spencer ran out the back door. From that point on I don't know what happened. All I know is that Lucy was stuck there all night. Every scheme got worse and worse. They've been arch enemies ever since.

Marie Grey was sitting at the front crying hard. I have no idea why. She was a nerd to Spencer. She was teased and taunted every day from her. Spencer was a princess and Marie was her slave. From fetching her drinks to taking the blame, Marie did everything. She was a reluctant participant but still did everything to perfection.

Beside her is Ginette Price. She was student body president, head cheerleader and had an internship at seventeen magazine. She is perfect. Spencer was jealous at first but then they instantly became friends.

It was at Trevor Patterson's party. Spencer got sick after eating some berries Lucy gave her. Ginette went over to her afterwards and said, "We should get revenge." Later that night they played the biggest prank ever. I don't know what it was but I know it was horrible. Three people got injured that night, Ginette was one of them. Ginette was never seen again. But now she 's back.

I wake up from my countless memories. I still haven't scanned the entire church. The song is over and I'm the only one still standing. I awkwardly sit down, trying to avoid everyone's stares. I try to remain focus for the rest of the funeral.
