'Happy' Birthday

The rest of the day went by fairly quickly. I kept mentally smacking myself every time I thought of my encounter.

Why must I be like this?

I got home as always, worked on some homework. Had dinner with my family. The night's only key difference is that I washed my hair. Everything was getting kind of routine. I was beginning to hope that the weekend would bring something new and interesting to the table.

Throughout the week, Jeffery and I had started talking a bit more, we were possibly progressing towards a small friendship. But I still couldn't shake that there was something wrong. Behind all the friendly smiles, and kind actions, I feel like he's hiding something.

But... I'm sure it's nothing.

Soon, it was Saturday, the day of the party.

"(Y/N), are you coming or what?" I heard my mom ask from downstairs.

"Y-yeah! I'll be there in a minute!" I called back to her.

I quickly grabbed my bag and headed downstairs.
Mom, Dad, and Alyssa were already standing at the door rather impatiently. I was wearing an (F/C) button up blouse with black dress pants. Mom always insisted overdressing was better than underdressing.

We hurried out the door and walked over to Billy's house. It wasn't far, just across the street and a few houses to the left. When we got there, Dad reached out his fist and knocked on the door a few times.

"Come in!", we heard a voice shout from inside.

Opening the door, we stepped in and looked around. There were mostly just grownups chatting amongst themselves.

"So glad you could make it! Please, make yourselves at home. The snack table is over there if you need anything," Billy's mother, Barbara, gestured to the table against the wall, "I'll be in the kitchen getting the rest." She said  and trotted back over to the kitchen.

Dad and Alyssa went to the backyard, where there were a bunch of kids with fake guns and cowboy hats. I could see Jeff was out there playing with them too, he looked like he was enjoying himself. I chuckled inwardly.

While Mom was socializing with some of the neighbours, I decided to head to the kitchen. Maybe Barbara could use some help.

"Can I help?" I asked her.

She looked over to me, veggie plater in hand, "Oh, if you wouldn't mind placing this on the-" she was cut off by the loud, unmistakable sound of wheels from the backyard, and kids screaming.

She put the plater down and we both went to see the commotion.

The brutes of the town, Randy, Troy and Keith were now in the backyard. This was trouble. They were definitely here to crash the party.

"Hello, Jeff, is it? We have some unfinished business," Randy looked at Jeff in hatred. His nose was bruised and a bit swollen.

"I think we're even. I beat the crap out you, and you get my brother sent to JDC," Jeff stated.

"Oh no, I don't go for even, I go for winning. You may have kicked our asses that one day, but not today," Randy said, charging at Jeff and tackling him to the ground.

He punched Jeff, only to get grabbed by he ears and head butted back. Randy was pushed off, and both boys rose to their feet. Some kids were screaming and parents were rushing out to see what was happening. Alyssa ran over and got behind me, clearly scared to tears. The two sidekicks pulled out guns. Real ones.

"No one interrupts or guts will fly!" They shouted to everyone. Randy pulled out a knife. He jabbed it into Jeff's shoulder, making him let out a scream and fall to his knees. He was kicked in the face, but took Randy's foot and twisted it. Randy collapsed and Jeff stood, walking towards the back door, only to be grabbed by the tub of lard known as Troy.

"Need some help?" Troy mocked as he smashed him against the patio door. Jeff tried to stand but was kicked down, Randy got up and started repeatedly kicking Jeff 'til he began coughing up blood. Everyone was watching it go down, knowing they couldn't really do anything to stop it.

"Come on Jeff, fight me!" He yelled, throwing Jeff into the kitchen.

The bottle of vodka left on the counter was picked up, and smashed over his head.

"Fight!" Randy yelled again, as he pushed Jeff back to the living room, "Come on Jeff, look at me!" Jeff glanced up, his face covered in blood and alcohol.

"I was the one who got your brother sent to JDC! And now you're just gonna sit there and let him rot in there for a whole year! You should be ashamed!" Jeff looked frustrated and angry to the point of tears.

He began to stand.

I watched intently as the event unfolded, not daring to interfere, but wishing I could just get Jeff out of there.

"Oh finally! You stand and fight!" Randy egged him. He was such a jerk, and everyone knew it, but we didn't think he was so bad as to do something like this.

Jeff twitched as he got up, Randy yelled some more bullshit at him.

I don't think anyone else noticed, but as he stood there, I saw a single tear roll down either side of his face. With those tears, the colour in his bright blue eyes dissolved.

They were grey now, lifeless.

His pupils went to extreme dilation as he twitched more and more when Randy charged at him.

Something was seriously wrong with Jeff, as he jumped on Randy and punched him straight in the chest.

Struggling to breathe, Jeff hammered down on him, punching him as blood leaked from the boys body. He took one final breath, and fell limp.

Randy was dead. Jeff killed him.

Everyone looked at Jeff, concern and fear plastered onto their faces. A shocked Troy and Keith aim their guns at Jeff as he got up and bolted up the stairs. They shot at him, missing each time. Troy and Keith follow him up, not far behind. We hear bullets flying and hitting walls and pots, the something is ripped out of the wall, probably from the bathroom. I couldn't help but look at Barbara. She looked horrified. It was her house this was happening in, after all. Billy was hanging onto her arm tightly.

I turned my attention back to the fight taking place upstairs. We heard crashing and a loud SMACK as something toppled to the ground. There was struggling heard and something fell over as we heard a splash. There were two screams emitted from Jeff and Keith, we heard another smacking sound and a fall to the floor.

"What's so funny?" We could hear Jeff ask. There was a click.

"What's funny, is that you're covered in bleach and alcohol," Keith told him. I could barely make it out.

I heard something small be tossed and suddenly there was a scent of burning. Agonizing screams coming from Jeff and we heard rolling around then he came running, then tripping and falling down the stairs. He was on fire.

Some of the grownups went over to him, trying to extinguish the fire as best they could. He passed out from the pain. They eventually got the fire out, and one of the neighbours saw the fight beforehand through the window and called 911. An ambulance showed up, two of the paramedics put Jeff on a stretcher and carried him away. The two others asked questions about what had happened and got the now dead bodies of the three bullies, all bled out. Jeffrey's hair was singed black and he looked like he was in horrible condition for the time being. Hopefully it'll heal, although, I could tell, he'd never look the same as he once did.

But what I was really worried about wasn't his appearance, it was his mind.

Will he... be okay?
