Champagne in my glass I cast my eyes on the huge flat screen hanging on the wall. The screen depicts the New Years Ball, lit and ready to go, suspended high over Time Square. Metal meets a glass as Eric pulls everyone's attention, shutting the music off.
"Everybody have their drink?" he calls lifting his glass to the room. With his arm wrapped around his wife's shoulders as she smiles, her eyes on him.
"Yeah!" The room replies cheering.
"Good, don't drink it all now, remember it's for the drop." The music comes back on and people continue dancing and socializing; music pulses through the room, just loud enough to cause the floor to bounce. I rotate my wrist, swirling the champagne in my glass as I look across the living room into the kitchen. Bria, takes a sip from her glass, her lips indulging in the sweet semi-clear liquid. A tattoo of small black birds materializing off maples leaves, fly up the across her right shoulder blade inches from her hair. Shifting her weight, her long dark hair falls off her shoulder in light voluminous waves against her back. Her maroon dress clings to her body, smoothing over her curves, enclosing her body in the almost metallic fabric.
She laughs, her stunning smile causing one on my own face. I sip my own drink.
"So, Bria," Phil says nudging me as he nods in her direction.
"Yeah," I smile back. "Wasn't sure she'd come."
"Bet you're happy I introduced you to her now," he chuckles, "Besides, the girl likes a good party and we're good friends. Go talk to her."
"I will, I will."
"Alright, fair enough. Imma go," He says pointing in another direction, he smirks walking in to the crowded center of the room.
Biting my lip I head towards the kitchen but just as I get close, Bria turns in my direction.
"Hey!" She gives me an unexpected hug, I put my hands on her hips as she pulls me forward with one arm. She smells of apples and honey, the scent striking my senses. "It's good to see you again."
"You too. Phil told me he invited you but I didn't think you'd show," I tease.
"Why wouldn't I? I couldn't miss the hottest New Year's party around." She smiles collecting her hair on one side as she runs her hand through it. She looks at me.
"Right, right. Got your resolutions yet?"
"Yeah the usual, work out more, eat healthier, be more productive. You?
"Some of the same. Just going to see where the time takes me but I do have this one resolution, don't know if it will happen though."
"What is it?"
"It's sort of like a wish."
"You gonna tell me?" she sips her drink. Her bright red lips curving into the same smile from before.
"But if I tell you, it won't come true will it?"
"You have a valid point."
"Hey! Everyone! Glasses up!" Eric yells over the music. Some one turns it off. Everyone's attention including Bria's and mine falls on the flat screen.
11:59
"Five! Four! Three! Two! One! Happy New Year!" The room screams at the top of their lungs followed by the knocking back of their drinks.
"Bria!" I yell over the screams. Her eyes meet mine. My heart thumps in my chest, pounding against my rib-cage.
"Yeah!"
My lips meet hers, unfolding firmly in a the form of a kiss. She accepts as another kiss follows.
"First resolution, check," I whisper.
"Happy New Year Bruno." Her eyes sparkle.
"Right back at ya, Bria."
Was I where I wanted to be on New Years Eve? I would say Oh yeah.
