To say I was impatient was a lie. To say I was possibly the most impatient person in the world would be more of the truth. I just couldn't stand waiting. So, when I had to wait in a hospital waiting room that smelled like old people it sucked. Mainly because of the waiting, but the stench wasn't helping.
After sitting in a plastic, rock-hard-on-the-butt chair for over three hours, the news was finally delivered. My mom was stable, in a coma, but stable. There was also a lot of medical terms throw in but that was the gist. All would be okay.
My relief was short lived however when I found I would have to stay with my brother. A dad in prison, no other family but a junkie brother who flunked out of high school. Exciting.
I hadn't seen Koby since I was twelve and he was seventeen. He had just told mom that he got expelled and she kicked him out. Not one of their finest moments. Aa far as I could remember he was pretty cool, constantly high, but not a bad guy. He was pretty talented at math, when we were kids that's all he wanted to do in college. Kind of a lame choice if you asked me.
My social worker- Kerry decided it would be a good idea to avoid foster home care at all costs. She was a nightmare dressed in fluorescent pink with matching clip in hair extensions. Basically Katie Perry circa 2012.
"Chin up Rory" Kerry smiled handing me over my third coffee of the day, "I'm sure you'll love living with your brother."
"I really can't wait to get high everyday if I'm being honest." I sighed. "Can't wait to smoke some cocaine."
"Rory, you don't smoke cocaine you snort it. At least learn how to do it right."
"Whatever, how long will it take for Koby to get here? I'm really bored." Typical Koby, he was late to everything. I don't think that boy had a punctual bone in his body.
I couldn't sit still. Whether it was nerves or impatience, I couldn't sit in the chair anymore. I had been in moms hospital room until visiting hours had finished, when Koby was supposed to arrive. Unsurprisingly he was taking his time.
"Maybe we should just go. I mean he's obviously not going to come, I'd rather go home than wait here." I bounced on the balls of my feet looking for an excuse to leave. I was sick of being disappointed by my family.
"Relax kid. He'll be here soon there's probably just bad traffic." Kerry grabbed my shoulders and sat me back on the hard plastic, leaving a firm hand on my arm.
Doctors bustled in and out of the empty waiting room, often with stressed faces. I'd hate to be a doctor, sick people really freaked me out. Just the general gist, coughing, sneezing, it was really disgusting.
Hearing the doors to the waiting room be pushed open caught my attention. It was him, all six foot of Koby. He had certainly changed since I had seen him last, being expelled worked wonders. He was clothed in an expensive suit, slick haircut and perfectly trimmed facial hair. If not for his eyes, the same shade of aquamarine, a playful glint hidden inside I would not have recognised him. He strode across the waiting room, a large grin on his face. Suddenly I couldn't control myself- he was my brother, and I ran across the room into his arms. He had grown plenty, broadened out his shoulders so he was no longer a lanky seventeen year old.
I nestled my head into his shirt, needing to hold on for just a minute longer. He was all I had left.
"Rory," he smiled, "it's been a while kid."
Suddenly we were back to being Koby and Rory, all tension, all nervousness gone.
"Come on bro," I smiled, "we've got some catching up to do."
As I unlocked the door to our apartment Koby looked around apprehensively. He had never seen this place, we moved a year after he left. It was certainly a lot less nice than our old home, but it did the job.
"What happened to your peephole?" Koby asked, pulling out the paper we stuffed in it.
"We're not really sure, it was probably Gerard our neighbour. He's a bit of a stalker." I said absentmindedly, beginning to gather my blankets from the couch. As I packed my bags Koby looked around, examining our minuscule apartment.
"Where did you sleep?" He enquired, confusion clear.
"The couch mainly, mom kind of ruined the bed." I shuddered, thinking of the long nights spent hiding under my blankets, earphones in, eyes shut trying not to let tears escape.
"She let you sleep on the couch? Did she not realise how damaging that can be to your back?"
"I don't think she ever noticed, our mom isn't exactly woman of the year."
It was no big deal to me. I preferred the couch much more to the bed, and hey, beggars can't be choosers.
"Ro- how could you live like this?" Koby began, before I interrupted.
"Seriously Koby, let's save the massive DMC for another day. I was fine, life with mom was fine."
Sure mom mightn't always have been the greatest big she still looked out for me. She was my best friend, I wasn't about to rat her out for her mistakes. We all make them, why should Koby judge hers?
"I have four other roommates," Koby explained. "I really hope it's not a problem, they're looking forward to meeting you a lot."
Four other people living in one tiny apartment. I suddenly began to feel horrible about the arrangement.
"You know if there's no room for me it's cool, I can just sleep here at our apartment. I don't want to cause a problem."
"Don't stress sis, there's enough room for you."
Kobe continued rooting through our stuff, he had now made his was to the kitchen and was going through our press. He pulled out our one plate and set of knife and fork.
"Seriously?" He didn't seem confused anymore, just in despair. "What happened after I left?"
"A lot more than you could learn in one evening buddy."
