I watched him as he sat, all alone, eating his dinner. He was our last customer of the night. I was covering the closing shift, so it was only us two in the diner. I wasn't complaining though. He came here everyday, and I examined him each and every time. I would always hide behind a magazine as to not be obvious. He was absolutely fascinating to me.

Why was he always alone?

I decided to finally say something to him.

But what?

I didn't want to overthink it. I put my magazine down and stood up, making my way towards him. It wouldn't be obvious I was lurking since he was done with his plate. He was just finishing up his coffee.

"Are you done with your plate?" I smiled lightly at him. All he did was look up at me and stare. You would think I felt uncomfortable, but I really didn't. I would like to think I knew him. Shortly after he noticed I saw him staring, he nodded, taking a sip of his coffee. "Would you like some more?" I grabbed his plate. "No thank you. I ought to be going now," He put some cash on the table. "Have a good night." And with that he left, walking into the darkness of the night. I sighed, grabbing his dishes and money. I quickly cleaned up, desperately wanting to go home.

I got in my 1972 chevy pickup truck and headed home. I turned on my windshield wipers since it started to sprinkle. On my way I noticed someone walking alongside the road. I slowed down once I noticed it was the man from the diner. I slowed to a crawl. It was now raining, hard. "Need a ride?" I sent him a warm smile. I usually wouldn't do anything like this, but this felt right. Even though he was a complete stranger, I knew I could trust him. Is that weird? He looked around before hopping in the passengers seat. "Thanks." He glanced over at me, giving me the faintest smile. "So," I glanced over at him quickly. "Where to?"

"Thanks for the ride." He hopped out of the car and started walking towards his front door. I rolled down my window. "Hey," He slowly turned around. His face looked like he was wondering why I was still here. "If you ever need a ride, I can give you one. I don't live to far from here." He nodded and waved at me before disappearing into his house.

I switched on the lights of my two bedroom apartment. I set my things down on the couch and sat down, sighing. I was so lonely. I have no family besides my parents, and they didn't exactly live close, so I was alone all of the time. The only time I'm really around anyone else is when I'm at work. It was kind of depressing. I am always alone.

Maybe that's what attracts me to him.

I just realized this, but I'm drawn to him because we are both alone. If there's another night like this, when we are the only people left in the diner, I will approach him. I wanted to get to know him. No, I have to get to know him. I slowly drift asleep, with him on my mind.
