Four months ago I found out my life was changing. It was one of those big unexpected bombshells that leave no part of your world unscathed. The kind that immediately remind me of these lines from the 1998 romantic comedy You've Got Mail, one of the only chick flicks I can stomach: "People are always tell you that change is a good thing. But all they're really saying is that something you didn't want to happen at all... has happened. ... But the truth is... I'm heartbroken. I feel as if a part of me has died, and my mother has died all over again, and no one can ever make it right."
Well, as true as that may be in the moment (and the first few weeks thereafter), we can and do move on. For my family and I, it meant some planning and reorganizing. My husband's been itching to go back to his gig in film and television, and I've got dreams too. One of them is writing stories, as a job.
Today marks day three of doing that. An eighteen-month experiment that'll undoubtedly have some side trips and projects and odd jobs, but yeah, here's to dreaming in 2017.
Now, since you all have been so unbelievably patient during this time - waiting for me to return to complete Ruler and upcoming fourth and final book in the Blood Magic Saga, Rebels - I've decided to give you all a little Xmas gift this year (if you don't celebrate, simply consider it a token of my appreciation) in the form of a short story set some six years before the events of Bleeder, featuring a young Keel trying to get to the bottom of this whole Mr. Claws business.
Enjoy!
