Enid sat still on the bench upon a porch of one of the houses in Alexandria. It was a boring day, and she had been writing in her notebook. She liked to observe what was going on around her. She would write about it and draw illustrations to go along with them.
Even though she didn't think they were very good she liked to keep track. She liked to keep track of what happened around her so if her scenery were to ever change she could remember what it had looked like.
She saw Carl walking around, talking to the other Alexandrians, carrying Judith. Although Enid wasn't a huge fan of babies, when little Judith became the last baby in the world, she enjoyed her company. Enid continued to write in her journal
*There are six people unloading the truck that had just been brought back from the run. There are two more people who are emptied the content of the boxes.*
She didn't notice that Carl had started to observe her. Carl was quiet, but in a different way. He was strong, and kept quiet most of the time but he spoke up when he needed to.
"Hey Enid," he said, trying to wave while holding Judy with his other hand. "What are you writing?" "Nothing." She said without looking up from her notepad. "It's nothing". Carl put Judith down on the wooden planks of the old porch. He tried to grab Enid's notebook as she pulled it away. "Carl!" She giggled as Carl continued to try to snatch her book. "Carl stop!" Enid stop laughing but was still playful. Carl stopped and sat down on the bench next to her. They watched Judith crawl, making sure she didn't fall off the porch.
"Can I read it?" Said Carl. "Please?"
"Fine!" Enid gently handed him her prized book. He started to read her messy cursive writing. "It's not any good. It's just a journal." Carl continued to read. "No it's good." He said.
Enid gave him a stealthy grin. Carl stayed with a straight face. As their eyes met, Carl could feel the hairs on the back of his neck stick up, and Enid could feel butterflies in the pit of her stomach. "No really." He repeated whilst handing it back to Enid. "I didn't know you could write"
Enid tucked her journal into her messenger bag. "I didn't either" she said, trying to avoid eye contact. There was a moment of silence. Carl picked up Judith and began to walk away. He turned around. "Hey Enid, what are you doing tonight?" Enid froze. Carl turned back around, facing her and waiting for a response. "Uh nothing," She said "why?"
The two of them became awkward. "I was wondering if you might wanna go for a walk with me. Outside the walls, like we used to? I'll try to get my dad to watch her." He pointed to Judith who was resting her small head on Carl's shoulder.
"Um... Sure. Why not." Enid said pulling on her hair. "What else do I have to do?" "Ok cool. Well meet me, later." He said. "At our spot." Carl walked away with Judith in his arms.
