Why do I constantly feel like the Jack Nicholson Joker is one of the most underrated versions of this character? Like, when you look at the comics..he captures the character perfectly. While Heath Ledger was amazing..Nicholson's Joker is more in touch with earlier comic versions.
I just feel like he doesn't get the recognition he deserves for this one. He's funny, but deadly. That's what I love about this Joker! A lot of that aspect of him changed after and possibly just slightly before Ledger's Joker.
A lot of the reason why I am saying this and the reason why I love this Joker so much is because of how well he was able to bring the comics to the big screen. With the comic book movie industry trying to copy Christopher Nolan's superhero formula every left and right(and completely failing at it, might I add.), it's hard to look back and appreciate the genius that was there all along. We are so focused on the gritty realism in comic book movies that we forget about some of the actual source material.
Sometimes, I stop and think 'maybe that's why we hated the new 52 so much. Because it was trying to mirror the movies at the time.' I feel like that's why it's so hated. Not only had it wiped away the pre-existing DC continuity, but it completely damaged its own name and characters by trying to introduce this "realistic" and darker look to the comics. When in truth, we did not need that. We had that perfect balance of realism and fantasy. We were fine with the way DC comics was going.
Look at it this way...without this Joker...we wouldn't have Mark Hamil's Joker..would we? Now I am not saying that this is the only good Joker. As a matter of fact, my favorite Joker is the Mark Hamil one, I'm just saying that when it comes to movies..this one has been the closest portrayal to the comic Joker.
