Fake ID

Neon yellow police tape was wrapped around everything. Trees, rocks, small bushes and even a rope attached to a near by tree were covered. Three or four policemen waited near the rope as one after the other they entered the cave.  Sunlight filtered through the pine tree’s branches scattering shadows like lost ghosts. Tombstone boulders emerged here and there around the summer tundra.

“FBI Agent Hooveger,” flash of an ID card, “Can you tell me about what happened in the cave?” She placed her fake ID card into the inner pocket of her tan trench coat and returned her attention to the trembling teenage girl. Agent Hooveger is just a fake name Enya Zander. She has been raised into this retune of passing off as a fake FBI agent ever since she could speak. Her family is a family of hunters but they don’t hunt deer or rabbits like regular people do; the Zanders hunt monsters. Monsters that parents tell stories of to their little boys. Monsters that thirst for human blood; monsters that kill people.  Police think it is just man killing man so hunters need a cover up in order to track  them down. It is a monster Enya is hunting now and she needs information on where it is. Bleary eyed, wringing her hands the teen looked up to Enya.

“All of us were in the cave taking mineral samples when I heard Hannah and Andrew’s scream. My partner, Elizabeth, and I raced over to where they were suppose to be. The cave walls oozed White Nose Syndrome and…”

“Wait. What is this ‘White Nose Syndrome’ ?”

“It is a fungus that targets bat’s faces or wings when they hibernate, waking them up. The bats fly around looking for food yet the insects that they eat are gone so they end up dying by starvation. Our group is looking for this fungus so that we can block off the caves that have it. Like I was saying, we found the fungus all along the walls. Suddenly the fungus had small specks of red on them. That’s when…” She shook her head, tears starting to form.

“That’s when we found them. Their blood was splattered on the fungus. Th-their bodies were burnt. They weren’t completely burnt ‘cuz some parts of their skin was still pink. And… and whatthe worst part was that their eyes were gone. The eyes should have been there, right? Oh poor Hannah…” She began to weep so communicating was impossible. Enya thanked her for her time and walked toward the ominous cave.

“So what did you find out, Enya?” The phone muffled her friend’s voice as she drove her yellow Mustang back to the hotel a few towns over from where the cave was.

“Not a lot, Eli. I talked to the victim’s parents. Didn’t find anything in common except that both were students from the same school, the same caving group, and   they reported that their house lights have been flickering. The parents said that the lights have been a problem for a month now. That’s when the other deaths started to happen. Yes, I did all the tests to see if it was a ghost or demon. Nothing showed up so it is neither of those. I checked out the cave too.  I sent you the picture of the cave to your computer. There is tons of white foamy goo along the walls. Any ideas on what monsters are related to white goo?”

Her high school friend paused a moment, the sound of clacking keyboard keyscame from the speaker.

“You’re going to have to give me a few hours. I’ve never seen anything like this.  It has to be something that I haven’t hunted before because I can’t think of any monster that has these symptoms. I’ll look up as much information as I can find and I suggest that you do the same.” A quick good bye and he hung up.

“Research, research, research is all that kid ever thinks of.” ,Enya mumbled.

Back when they were both in high school a man eating werewolf attacked the school and it was Eli who helped her hunt it down. He has been proven helpful on many hunts so Enya partnered up with him. They have been hunting together now for fifteen years. “Well back to the books.”
