The warmth of the fire makes me feel at home, the auburn sparks glowing in the night sky, and the glistening stars blending into the sky as tears fill my eyes. This feeling of comfort will be the death of me. I keep telling myself, I have to go. I lean my head on Allie and my vision blurs, this is goodbye to Montana.
Mom stands up from the circle of friends sitting around on the logs. "Alright enough chit chat, its time to face the facts." She tilts her head over towards me and smiles.
"These two girls are about to break our hearts tomorrow and run away. I cant believe all the years of crazy talk have finally led you here, but I wish you all the best. Liv, my baby girl I love you so much," I can see her eyes swell up, "be safe.' I blow her a kiss.
"So cheers, to the girls who are making their dreams happen!"
"Cheers!"
Everyone clinks plastic cups with those around them, and Allie and I just smile at each other. It's finally happening. We've been plotting and planning for so many years. From the moment I met her I felt like I'd known her for a lifetime. She was the sister I'd never had, almost too good to be true.
Mom sits back down, and Caleb takes her place.
He takes a deep breath glancing back and forth between Allie and I. "I don't even know where to begin. Without you two only God knows where I'd be today."
I grin at him, we've been so close for so long, I remember when he was in primary school.
"I want to follow you so badly, but I'm stuck here with my good friend called, 'three more years of college', otherwise I would be sitting there right next to you on the plane tomorrow."
It's true, he wants to come just as much as we do. I cant help but feel a little guilty.
"Anyway, I'm not going to rant, you know how much I'm gonna miss you. So good luck, don't forget me when your A listers living in beverly hills."
Everyone laughs and claps and he sits back down. Chatter slowly begins and the music starts again, the last few hours we have left in our old lives, in our old town.
"I'm gonna get some air." Allie whispers as she pats my leg and pulls herself up.
"Are you sure? We're already outside..." I look up at her waiting for a reply to my sarcastic comment, but she doesn't even reach my eyes.
She just walks away, towards the beach. I watch her stumble away and I feel a slight pang of disappointment. She has to get upset now, doesn't she.
I roll my eyes and follow her footprints along the sand, which eventually lead me to a sand dune, further down the beach. She's staring into the night, I haven't seen her like this since she didn't get the lead role in our junior year musical.
I sit myself next to her, sliding over as close as possible. "Alright, whats up, I haven't seen you like this in a long time."
She doesn't reply, but I see a numbness over her face. That doesn't need any words.
"I'm scared Liv." she says as plainly as ever. She wraps her arms around her bare legs and rests her head on her knees.
"When I'm getting everything I've ever wanted, I cant help but feel like its all going too well, like something bad's gonna happen, you know what I mean?"
I smile, I can't deny I've felt the exact same way for some time now.
"Hey I get it, but this is only the beginning. There is so much thats gonna happen Al, and you've just gotta keep pushing, do it for all those times you've gotten up on stage and wished you were singing to the world, not just high school."
