WHEN RAIN CLOUDS GATHER

222 8 2

He stepped out of the palanquin;

With the brimming water pot and willow branch in his hand.

He gazed upon the sky,

He prayed for the heavens to open and shower.

He stood on the cracked and torn Earth,

He knew she was dying for a drop of water.

He swore with his whole heart to her,

That he will persuade the heavens to quench her thirst.

The street he stood had citizens gathered on its pavements

At the sight of their Prince , they bow down to His Highness.

They all shouted in a chorus,

"Son of Dragon , give us rain"

The Prince dipped the willow branch in the brimming pot,

He sprinkled the water on the dry  ground.

 He chants his prayer as he sprinkles,

He walks to the Temple of Dragon.

His Majesty and his courtiers stood in front in front of the altar.

They all had their eyes fixed upon His Highness;

As he climbed the stairs of the altar.

The rain ritual is coming to its end.

No sign of clouds were seen,

Still the Prince prayed to the Dragon God.

Each chant was from the bottom of his heart,

And with each chant tears ran from his jeweled eyes.

A roaring thunder shook the ground.

Dark grey rain clouds gathered in the sky.

The first drop of rain kissed the eye of the Prince.

Then came the second, the third and soon it was raining.

All shouted their gratitude to the Dragon God,

And all praised the Prince.

The air was scented with a sweet scent;

The scent of the damped soil.

And on the altar there was no sight of Prince Wang So.

But instead stood the future Gwangjong of Goryeo.

When the rain clouds gathered;

The heavens chose the future King : Gwangjong of Goryeo

The heavens chose the future King : Gwangjong of Goryeo
