There's nothing wrong with using the word said in writing, however, other words to use instead can put more excitement or expression into the speech.
A - accused, acknowledged, added, addressed, admitted, advised, affirmed, agreed, announced, answered, approved, argued, asked, asserted, assured, avowed.
B - babbled, barked, bawled, beamed, began, begged, bellowed, bet, bleated, blurted, boasted, boomed, bragged, broke in, bubbled, bugged, burst out.
C - called, cautioned, chatted, cheered, chimed in, choked, chortled, chorused, chuckled, claimed, clucked, coaxed, commanded, commented, complained, conceded, concluded, confessed, confided, congratulated, continued, convinced, corrected, coughed, cried, croaked, crowed.
D - dared, decided, declared, demanded, denied, described, disagreed, disclosed, divulged, doubted, drawled.
E - echoed, ended, exclaimed, explained.
F - finished, fretted.
G - gasped, gibed, giggled, greeted, groaned, growled, grunted, grumbled, guessed, gulped, gurgled.
H - hinted, hissed, hollered, hypothesized.
I - imitated, implied, informed, inquired, insisted, interjected, interrupted.
J - jeered, jested, joked.
L - laughed, lied, lisped.
M - maintained, marvelled, mentioned, mimicked, moaned, mocked, mumbled, murmured, mused, muttered.
N - nagged, nodded, noted.
O - objected, observed, offered, ordered.
P - panted, piped, pleaded, pled, pointed out, pondered, praised, prayed, proclaimed, promised, proposed, protested, put in, puzzled.
Q - quavered, queried, questioned, quipped, quoted.
R - ranted, reasoned, reassured, recalled, reckoned, related, remarked, remembered, reminded, repeated, replied, reported, requested, responded, retorted, revealed, roared.
S - sang, sassed, screamed, scoffed, scolded, shot, shouted, shrieked, shrilled, sighed, smiled, smirked, snapped, snarled, sneered, sneezed, snickered, sniffed, sniffled, snorted, sobbed, spluttered, squeaked, stammered, started, stated, stormed, stuttered, suggested, surmised.
T - taunted, teased, tempted, tested, theorized, threated, told, trilled.
U - urged, uttered
V - volunteered, vowed.
W - wailed, warned, went on, wept, whimpered, whined, whispered, wondered, worried.
Y - yawned, yakked.
