I woke up and didn't have a headache or anything. I looked over at my couch and saw a lump. I had forgotten that John had spent the night. I got up and looked to the clock. It was about 4 p.m. I got started to make green tea. I pulled out two cups then dropped one. I don't know why I started laughing at the shards on the ground. I was probably still drunk. I heard a groan come from the living room. I got another cup and poured tea in both cups. I walked into the living room and slightly nudged John to get up. I could see a smile being repressed on his mouth.
"John I know you're awake."
"How'd you know." He said as he turned around.
"You tried your hardest not to smile when I touched you."
"Yea." He had a full on grin now. "Hey what did you make?"
"I made some tea." I handed him a cup.
"Thanks," He took a sip. "So, what do you do at your house?"
"Paint most of the time, or play the guitar I guess."
"You play guitar." He sounded surprised.
"Yeah," My voice broke as I turned my face away. I haven't played it a while. I had been distracted I guess.
"Are you alright?" His voice was heavy and full with concern.
"Yeah I'm fine." I wiped a tear from my cheek and weakly smiled. "Lets go for a drive or something."
We walked up to my car and got in. We drove around the city for awhile. Talking about our favorite bands and making up stories about the people in the cars next to us. I drove him back to his place. He got out and started walking to his door when he stopped and turned and walked back to the car.
"Do you wanna come in and maybe have a drink or something?"
"Sure." I shrugged.
He opened the door and it was a little messy. By a little, i mean, there was just notebooks stacked messily and a bowl or something on the table.
"John is that you?" It was Flea. He came out of the kitchen and walked over to John. "Oh how was your day honey?" Flea mocked.
"It was good man." John didn't play along with Flea pretending to be his wife. So Flea just kept on trying to kiss him until he would say something about it then Flea tickled John.
"Ok ok." John fell to the ground laughing. He got back up. "So Flea why are you here?"
"I left a couple of notes here when I came over to practice. Have you seen them."
"Yeah they're probably on the table."
Flea looked over at the small table next to the couch and saw the messy papers on top.
"Damn John you need to find a place for all this shit." Flea grinned and picked up what looked like his papers. "Okay I guess I should leave you two alone now." He patted John on the shoulder and left.
"So hows the band?" I tried to make small talk.
"Its fine, its great actually." He continued to talk as he entered the kitchen. "Fleas been really kind to me and he's been trying to get really close to me." He came out holding two glasses of water. He handed me one. He grabbed a hair tie on the table and put up most of his hair.
"That's Flea, if he likes you he'll want to hang out with you all the time."
"You're the same way too right? I mean we've spent the last two days together."
"I guess so huh." I took a sip of my drink and smirked. "So what do you do around here?"
"Sleep, write,play guitar, stretch, you know the usual."
"Stretching is cool." There was a moment of silence, till John broke it.
"Where do you escape to?"
"Wait what?" I questioned back.
"Like where do you go when you wanna escape it all."
"I go for a drive to the mountains to watch the stars."
"Lets go do that."
"Ok sure."
We raced to my car tackling and tripping each other to get there. After trying to get up one too many times. John tackled me and stole the keys. He ran off and locked the car.
"Hey, do wanna drive?" I asked John.
"I don't really know how."
"You're different John." My lips formed into a grin.
"Is that a good thing?"
"I don't know we'll have wait and see." I slightly flirted.
John opened the door and let me in.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
By the time we arrived to some secluded place in the mountains it was dark. So dark that I could barely see where John was or where any of the trees were. The only thing that could be seen was the thousands of stars that shined above. I climbed up onto the car and helped John up. We lay there for a couple minutes and the only thing that could be heard was the softness of Johns breath and the small breeze that flowed through the trees.
"Its so beautiful, so surreal." John began to speak. "And its so amazing to know that everything out there is so much larger than us, but we can just sit back and take it all in."
"It seems to be that were all just living in a dream or a persons imagination almost, and to believe that all of this could be real hurts my heart or my soul even." My face became pensive as I tried to come up with more words to describe how I felt.
"That's why we have to look toward moments like this or else we'll just die of melancholy and pessimism, and we'll never get to know how it uh." He smiled at how stuttered. "Feels to really be connected with the spiritual sides of life. How it really feels to be completely happy and euphoric."
"John, where do you escape to?" I turned my focus to him instead of the stars. His eyes became distant. A grin began to grow on his face.
"I don't know, I think its a place where its all feeling. Its this extreme feeling that I can't explain. Its intense. Maybe that's point of that place. Maybe its not meant to be seen or explained maybe it's meant to be felt and drowned in."
We sat there for the rest of the night asking each other questions till the sunrise.
