Nora
He clears his throat and puts the book he's reading down. His expression shows surprise which makes me want to explain myself immediately.
"I am sorry to barge in but I think your secretary... I think it was? She dropped me off because of the contract we signed?" My confidence slowly disinflated.
"Nora Fray?" I nod nervously. "It's nice to finally meet you. Now sit we must discuss our..." he pauses, "business."
Something in that pause makes my stomach turn. Maybe he is going to tell me that the contract is over and I no longer have this opportunity. I can't lose this chance. I need this. He can't do this to me.
Please don't let it be that.
I take a sit in front of him and wait patiently.
"Now the contract was perfectly clear about the amount of time this will take, 2 years. Although it will only take us 6 months to make everyone else believe that we are compatible. After those 6 months you'll become my wife and I your husband. After the two years we will divorce. You'll receive weekly payments but at the end of our marriage you'll receive a sum that I assure you will be satisfying. Are there any questions?" I open my mouth to say something but I am too confused and stunned once again by him to say anything.
I lay my hands flat on the table. "Compatible? Wife? Marriage? 2 years? This was nowhere in that contract!" Although I wouldn't know because I hadn't read it. I had just scanned the damn thing.
"It was clearly stated. If you would've taken the time to read it we wouldn't have to be wasting time on this. You agreed now you go through with it or do I have to mention the consequences if failing to meet the requirements of this contract?" His voice has gone to a serious harsh tone which gives me goosebumps, the bad kind.
"I need a copy of the contract." He looks through a cabinet and pulls out the sheets of paper I had signed. He hands them to me and I begin to read through them. He's right it's clearly stated that this is some kind of marriage arrangement. Is this even legal? I stop at one section and begin to read it out loud.
"You will comply with everything that is asked of you, any intimate and sexual desires included." I look up at him but there's nothing in his expression. I laugh because this must be some kind of joke.
"I will not have sex with you." I say bluntly. He gets up and lays both hands on the table, hard.
"I'll have my driver take you home. He will also pick you up tomorrow for our dinner. Please dress properly. I am very known as you know and the last thing I need is to been seen with a..." he stops himself before he can say it but I know what he means.
"That's what it seems like I'll be anyway. Your prostitute." He can't deny it. I didn't know what I was getting myself into but that is what I feel like I am now, a prostitute. Engaging in sexual activities with a completely stranger for payment.
"Take the contract and read over it. If there's any changes you would like to make we will discuss them at dinner tomorrow." He comes around his desk, I stand. He stops a few feet away at first and then moves closer leaving little space between us. He leans into my neck and whispers in my ear. "I would show those breast of yours Ms. Fray. Don't hide behind loose clothes when your body is meant to be shown. Have a good day love." And with that he walks out of the room. I don't know I am holding my breath until then. I hold back a scream and grab the damn papers following after him.
"Mr. Hamilton wait!" I find him on the first step turned away from me ready to take the next one. "I can't do this. I have someone in my life." It's not completely a lie. Joe is someone in my life.
"Then I expect you to break it off." His voice is firm and it makes me wonder if he even understood what I had meant. I couldn't just break it off with Joe. I care about him.
"Mr. Hamilton his-"
"Max, you call me Max from now on. And there's no going further into this. You end things with him and you focus on... us." He never turns to face me as he walks up the stairs. The way he said "us" made it sound business wise because that's what this is. I am the prostitute and he's my client. It's probably the worst way to put it but it's clear like water.
I grab my bag and head outside. Sure enough a guy stands in front of a Mercedes Benz. He opens the door inviting me in. I stand there questioning whether I should take the bus instead.
"Miss he's expecting me to drive you home safe and sound. I keep my word," the driver says. He doesn't look grumpy and evil like his boss so I get in. Once we are on the road I look through the contract carefully and navigate through my options.
1) I could play the good gal and go with the contract
2) I could be the bad gal and go with the contract
So both options require going with the contract but I don't have to make this easy for Mr. Hamilton. I will make sure he regrets doing this to me. Just like I regret not reading over those damn papers before signing them.
"Is everything okay?" The driver whose name I still don't know asks me. He seems genuine and kind.
"No actually... mmm what's your name?"
"Vinny," he responds.
"Well Vinny I actually wanted to know more about Mr. Hamilton. Perhaps you can help?" I give him a smile through the reviewer mirror.
"Miss I have worked with Max for 4 years, I cannot give you any information unless he is aware." Vinny is a loyal one then. I sink deeper into my seat and try to think of another way to get to him.
"You can call me Nora. Enough with the Miss. I am not asking you if you drive him to strip clubs on Fridays Vinny. I just want to know about him. You know like does he have family? Or does he hate board games?" I see Vinny raise an eyebrow and chuckle.
"Well Nora you can ask him yourself." He won't budge and it's obvious whose side he is on.
"Thanks Vinny."
