Chapter One: Oh, The Joy...Not
I let out a scream. It was all I could do. All I could see was dark. All I could hear were voices. All I could feel was the rope tying my wrists together, never giving slack.
My heart pounded. My thoughts blurred and raced. There wasn't even anything I could do about it. I was helpless. Hopeless. Fighting would result in either nothing or the loss of my life. I need help, but I know no one will come to my rescue.
My last thoughts were "You can take everything I have. You can break everything I am, like I'm made of glass, like I'm made of paper... I will be rising from the ground like a skyscraper. Like a skyscraper..." before my world faded to black and I began the fall into the afterlife or where ever we go when we die.
I sat upright in my bed, in a cold sweat and breathing heavily. It was a dream. It was only a dream. Nothing in it was real. Nothing had happened. I was still perfectly fine, safe and warm in my bed.
I let out a breath that I felt like I had been holding in forever. When will these nightmares cease to haunt me? That's all I want, for the nightmares to stop. I just want to get one night of good, sweet, delicious sleep. I hadn't seen much of it since that horrible night...
A shiver ran down my spine. That night is not one any human being should have forced upon them, to have burned in their memory for the rest of their life as I have. I never asked for this burden, nor did I ask to be the only keeper of this secret. This horrible... awful... secret...
My question was, why was I the one selected for this task out of the hundreds upon thousands of other people? Why me? Why...I flashed back to that horrible, terrible, awful day.
>>>FLASHBACK<<<
I darted across the snow like prey running from a predator, like as rabbit running from a hunter, as fast as I could. I was almost away. I almost outran it. I was so close to being safe.
I continued running as fast as my legs would allow. I made it. I had finally made it to safety, but I kept running even after I reached it. My heart pounded and my breath slowed. To run was no longer a part of survival. I could slow down. I could stop. I could finally rest.
I sat down in the cold snow, feeling like dying. I couldn't go back to my home. They would find me. I couldn't stay out here. I would freeze to death. There was nothing I could do. No place would ever be safe for me. I was pretty much sitting in my grave until I saw something. The something that had made this day as terrible as it was.
My mother and father also stood in the clearing. They were safe. Then a deer appeared. It smiled at me, its teeth long and razor-like. But deer don't smile... And we were safe. We were safe in the clearing right? I was wrong. I was horribly, terribly, completely and utterly wrong.
The deer sprung to attack me. My dad jumped in its path. They locked eyes, in a battle to the death. My dad pushed the deer down.
It ran like it was going to flee, but instead sprung on my father. It bit into his neck, leaving a puddle of blood by his dead body. It looked at me again, and smiled once more. It charged toward me. My mother simply stood there and watched. I watched it as raced towards me. It opened its mouth to strike and I grabbed it by its neck and twisted. It fell to the ground in pain.
I stood there and watched it for a few seconds as it wretched and took its final breath upon this earth. It was dead. I had killed it... with my own two hands...
As I looked over at my father's dead body, tears began to stream down my face. My dad... He was gone... I would never see him again, never again feel the warmth of his embrace, never more see his smiling face on Christmas or my birthday... Never... All that was over. All that I knew was gone and I will never be able to have what I once had ever again.
