Signe's POV
'Please...please, God please!'
I thought as I leaned on the sink staring at the pregnancy test. I gently tapped my finger at the counter while twirling my finger in my hair. My anxiety rose up and my legs begin to shake.
My phone beeped alerting me that time was up. I looked back down at the test..."-"
I put my head in my hands and sobbed. This was the 12th pregnancy test I bought and the 12th one that is negative. Why can't I get pregnant? I want to have a baby so bad but it's not gonna happen. Me and Sean have tried to many times! Are we unlucky or something?
I was interrupted to a knock on the door. "Baby? You okay?" Sean asks from the other side of the door.
I didn't reply back. Gently knocks continued.
"I...I know it's negative, babe. I'm sorry. I would love to give you a baby, it would be the most precious thing I ever gave to you!"
I slid down beside the counter and sat on the floor. The door opens and there stood Sean with his eyes staring down at me with sympathy. He walks over to me and sits beside me. He puts his arms around me and pulls me to his chest. I begin to cry. He gently rubs my back.
"Awh baby! It's ok to cry. I know how much you wanted a baby, I really do. We've done all we can."
"I'm sorry Sean." I say as I wipe my tears. "No honey, don't be sorry. It's not your fault. These things happen." He says.
He held me until I calmed down.
"I've always wanted to be a mother." I say.
He lifts my head up with his hands so I'm looking at him.
"You still can, babe. We can always adopt." He says.
I look back down at the floor.
"It won't be the same. The child won't be mine. I didn't give birth to it. I didn't carry it or anything like that." I say.
He sighs.
"I know. But you'll be the one giving it a better life! A better family, a better future." He says.
I look back up at him.
Maybe he was right. I could be giving a child a chance at life. Bringing it up in my care. The whole family won't treat it differently.
"Can...we have a look on websites?" I say to Sean.
A smile appears on his face he nods. He stands up and pulls me up with him.
"You want to adopt?" He asks me.
I nod. He smile gets bigger and he pulls me in for a hug.
"That's my girl!" He says and kisses my forehead.
We walk into the kitchen and checked on local children's care homes. After hours of searching we found a care home in Dublin. It was only two hours away so we decided to go there. Sean sent them an email and they replied back almost instantly, telling us we could come down straight away. We got ready and got in the car.
"You sure you want to do this?" Sean asks me before he starts the car.
I look deep into his eyes.
"Definitely!" I say.
He smiles and we pull out and go on our way.Two Hours Later...
We had now arrived at the Home. It was so beautiful! It was an old, grand house with vines along the brick walls. It has Disney characters painted on the windows. The front garden has tons of flowers. There was a big sign at the front.Blossom Grove Children's Home
We get out the car and walked on the pathway towards the door. Sean knocked on. A few seconds later a woman opens the door. She smiles when she sees us.
"Ah, well hello! You must be the McLouglins? Am I saying that correctly?" She asks.
We laugh.
"Yes, you're saying it right!" I say.
She smiles.
"Well, come on in! I've got all the children's files on my desk so we can get started straight away." She says and she leads us which I presume is her office.
"Go ahead and sit down...water?" She says, offering us a glass of water.
"Yes please!" I say. "Signe?"
Signe nods.
"She's a bit nervous I see?" The woman says.
I nod and Signe smiles.
"Yeah! Don't worry Lass, everything's gonna be fine!" I say to Signe.
She blushes and holds my hand.
The woman smiles and gives us our water.
We thanked her and she sat down behind her desk.
"Oops! Sorry, I didn't introduce myself! I'm Victoria, and I am the, as you can say the "boss" here." She says.
Me and Signe laugh.
She a gathers up some files and stacks them on top of each other.
"So...is there any sort of child you're looking for?" She asks us.
Me and Signe looked at each and shake our heads.
"Not really. Any child will do for us." I say.
Victoria nods. She opens up some files and hands them over to Signe and I.
"These files contain the children's photo, date of birth, age, how long they've been here and the reason why they've been brought here. Take your time looking at them-"
She was interrupted by a young girl who ran into the office looking exhausted.
"Ella? You okay?" Victoria asks.
Ella nods.
"Yeah I'm fine! Have you by any chance seen Tig? It's just that I've made her lunch and she ran off." She says.
Victoria shakes her head.
"Not seen her for a while actually." She says.
Ella nods and says hi to us before disappearing.
"You'll have to excuse her. That's Ella, the helper here. She's such a soul to these children. She was talking about Tig. Our little 3 year old who's a little rascal!" She says.
Me and Signe smile. Tig seems rather unique.
"By the look on your faces you seem quite interested with her." Victoria says.
"She seems it." I say.
Victoria laughs.
"Well...she only arrived a few months ago, she-"
She was interrupted again with Ella running back into the room.
"Vicky, seriously, I can't find her!" Ella says.
Victoria sighs.
"I'm guessing we're going rascal hunting again?" She says.
Ella nods and says hi to us again before running off. Victoria stands up.
"If you'll excuse me, I've got a rascal to find. You can keep looking at the files. I'll be right back!" She says and follows Ella down the hall.
"Well she seems joyful to have around. No wonder she's the boss of this place." Signe says.
We both laugh.
We begin to look through the files.
"Some of these children have disabilities. Poor things!" Signe says.
We then heard a noise from behind us. Me and Signe quickly turned round. There was what seemed like a hamper sat in the corner of the room which was moving. Me and Signe were confused. Before we could do anything, a head popped up to reveal a small girl sitting in it. She sees us and giggles. She had clothes on her head. I wonder who she was. We then hear footsteps running towards the office and the small girl pops back into the hamper.
"I'm so sorry for that. This little rascal is hiding very good." Victoria says and she enters the room.
"It's fine don't worry." Signe says.
She sits back down.
"So, have any ideas on a child?" She asks us.
"Well...we seem really interested in this Tig girl." I say.
Victoria smiles. She stands up and goes over to a set of draws, pulling out another file.
"I'm gonna be honest with you since you seem like a really nice couple. I hide away Tig's file because I wanted a family who I know would be right for her. And you two seem like that family." She says.
She hands us the file and I slowly open it to see a photo of a little girl.Name: Tigerlily Eloise
Age: 3
D.O.B: 1st May
Member of Blossom Grove: 6 months
Reason: AbandonedMe and Signe read through the whole file.
"Abandoned?" I ask.
Victoria nods.
"Somebody abandoned her on a train. Whoever it was, we could never find them." She says.
Victoria stands up and walks to the back of the room. Me and Signe were still looking at the file when we hear a squeal. We looked behind us to see Victoria tickling the little girl who was hiding in the hamper.
"There you are you little rascal!" Victoria says.
The little girl laughs. Victoria brings her over and sits her on her lap.
"This is the little Tig you were asking about." She says.
Tig just smiles and hides her face in Victoria's shirt.
"Awh, is somebody turning shy?" She says.
We hear a giggle. This made me and Signe smile.
"Where's Woolly?" Victoria asks.
Tig shrugs her shoulders. Victoria looks at our confused faces.
"Woolly is Tig's toy spider. She frigging loves it!" She says.
We nod.
"Well...what do you think?" Victoria asks.
Me and Signe look at each other. Was Tig the daughter for us?
We look back at Victoria.
"Where do we sign?" I ask.
We all laugh. Victoria gets out some paperwork and me and and Signe both signed it. We were then put in a small room with just us and Tig in while Vicky stayed outside.
"So, Tig? What's your favourite colour?" I ask.
"Pink...no! Pwurple...no! Bwue!" She says.
Me and Signe laugh.
"What's your favourite animal?"
"Pwanda!" She says.
"Favourite food?"
Oweos!" She says.
We asked her lots of fun questions until Vicky comes back in with the paperwork.
"It sounds like you guys are getting along well!" She says.
Tig giggles. We all sit around a table.
"Now, I have your signatures, all I need now it Tig's." She says.
Me and Signe were confused. How can a 3 year old have a signature?
Vicky gets out some paints and a paint brush. She gets the paintbrush and dips it in the blue paint.
"Tig? Do you like Jack and Signe?" She asked her as she paints Tig's small hand.
Tig looks at us before putting her hand down on the paperwork, leaving a handprint on it. Vicky looks at us.
"That's a yes!" She says smiling.
"Does that mean..." I say.
"Yep! She's your daughter!" Vicky says.
I pull Signe into a hug. I looked at her face. She was crying with happiness.
"Congratulations!" Vicky says.
Tig jumps up and down. I crouched down to her size and held out my hand. She holds it and I shake hands with her. She giggles and her cheeks go red. We all sat down. But before I could sit, I see a toy spider in my place.
I did what any 26 year old would do...
Scream.
"It's only a twoy spider!" Tig says.
We all laugh.Tig's POV
These people seem really nice! The man has funny hair and the lady is really pretty! I'm so excited that they're gonna be my new parents! I'm so excited to go home with them. It was funny seeing Jack being scared by Woolly.
