Working on yourself is one of the hardest things to do. But it's so satisfying when you realize that you actually can change and you are changing.
When Bailee showed up for the cheer tryouts on Friday, I was genuinely happy, and the smile that formed on her face when she saw me seemed more real than any other face she's ever pulled at me. She walked over to me and sat. I was tying my shoes as she sat.
"I'm a little nervous. I don't know why, this'll be a cake walk, right?" Bailee said, twiddling her thumbs within her gym bag.
"Trust me, if I thought I wasn't going to make the team, I wouldn't have showed up. And trust me, I'm a day and ten years out of the practice I need for this." Bailee laughed. "Between you and me, I'm just praying I don't break my neck. Easier said than done. However, as of recently, I have been working on my flexibility." I said with a small smirk, Bailee didn't catch my nod to Cade, and I was honestly happy about that.
Bailee and I exchanged words for a few minutes, then Imogen was in front of us. She smiled, but I could tell she was high on the power of being head cheerleader. Imogen Klein was a nice enough girl, but she was notorious for sleeping around with guys. Nothing is wrong with that, just different strokes for different folk. . . but not so different now.
"Hi girls, I'm Imogen. I see some new faces, and," Imogen turned her head to look at me, "some old ones." I met her smirk with an even more mischievous one. Imogen continued, telling us we all got 2 minutes to present a routine and that after we would be given different tumbles to perform.
A few girls went, and then it was Bailee, who nailed her routine and the tricks she was given. I smiled as she approached me. Then Imogen looked at me.
"The infamous Darcy Chapman." I stood and brushed past her as I came to the middle of the gym to do my routine. As soon as the music started, I was brought back to when I used to tumble on the mats in the gym everyday like it was nothing. Cheering was a lot different from gymnastics, Bailee had taught me a cheer routine a few years back when I used to be close with her. But I found a handle on it quickly.
After I finished the routine, Imogen called out moves that I could do in my sleep. I was the last person to try-out, so when I went back to sit on the bleachers, Imogen began talking to the full group of us again.
"Thank you to everyone who came out today. The list will be posted on Monday. Thanks."
"You were so good." Bailee said to me, as we were gathering our things to leave.
"Me? Bailee, you kicked my ass to pluto and back." She smiled.
"Hey, Fitz is coming to get me. Do you want a ride?" I nodded
"Sure." Imogen approached me, and I looked at Bailee. "Hey, wait for me?" She nodded and kept walking outside.
"So." I raised an eyebrow. "Thought you'd be a little more rusty than you were."
"Some things just never leave you."
"Guess not." She said, as she looked me up and down.
"Don't think I didn't know you didn't want me to be good." I smiled. "You gave me moves that most of these girls will never be able to do. I didn't know you and Taylor were such good buddies." She scoffed.
"I fucking hated her. And you know that." She sighed. "Darcy, I gave you those moves because I knew you could do them. I'm gonna be too busy next year to be captain." I quickly realized what she meant.
"You were trying me out as captain?" She nodded, then she smiled at me.
"See you on Monday." I lightly laughed and then met Bailee and Fitz outside.
