Chapter 3

"I need to speak to Doctor Hugo, please" Drake looks down at the nurse as she sit's staring at the computer screen in front of her.

"Doctor Hugo went home for the night." She responds without even looking up to make eye contact.

"What!" Drake slams his fists on the desk in front of him making the nurse jump. That seems to have gotten her attention. Drake gives her a smirk as he leans forward.

"Please tell me who the doctor on call is for the night when Doctor Hugo goes home?"

"No one tonight sir. It's only the night nurses on call due to the fact that there is no real need for any serious emergency to arise in the ward itself."

"What, you mean to tell me that if anything goes on in this ward tonight then there is no real medical practitioner to assist with the situation?" Drake can feel himself getting worked up. He clenches his hands over the desks edge, his knuckles turning white as he tries to keep it together.

"I will have you know that we nurses are well trained and fully equipped to handle any situation that might arise during the night, Mr!" The nurse shuffles in her chair and turns her attention back to the computer screen, not sparing him another moment of her time.

"Damn the whole lot of you!" He shouts to the nurse as he pushes himself away from the desks and starts walking down the hallway peeping into every room.

Finally almost at the end of the hallway he finds her. The light is dimmed and all you can see is the flickering of lights coming from the machines. A faint beeping sound from one of the machines and Charlene's shallow breathing makes the quiet in the room just so much more unbearable. Drake moves in slowly towards the bed. This can't be the same Charlene he said goodbye to yesterday morning, the same Charlene with her quirky comments about his "private business" that he had to lie about? There is a pipe going into her mouth and pipes all over her body. Making her look like some kind of a monster that they keeping alive for some or other evil experiments. Her face is all bruised up and swollen from the blows that these punks inflicted on her. If he gets hold of them this will look like a movie make up artists work compare to what he will do to them.

"Charlene." Drake whispers as he pulls a chair closer. Taking her left hand into his, he finally caves into all the emotions he kept bottled up inside of him.

"I am so sorry my dear Charlene. This is entirely my fault. I never should have left you alone." Drake rests his head on her hand sobbing softly as he confesses.

"I should have stayed and locked up not you. This was supposed to be me not you lying here all hooked up onto machines and pipes! And if only I made that phone call like I promised you." Lifting up his head from where it was resting on her hand he slowly moves to wipe some lose strands off hair from her face. Whishing that he could compare her face to that of an angel, not to that of a monster Drake starts crying uncontrollably.

"Drake...I'm so sorry"

"Please Drake don't be mad at me, please forgive me"

"I...I know who it was...I will show you!"

"Sir, please sir wake up! You can't be in here!" The nurse taps Drake softly on his shoulder. "Please sir I really do need you to wake up now!"

"I'm awake ok!" Drake lifts up his head that was still resting on Charlene's hand. Rubbing his eyes to adjust them to his surroundings, he notices that this is not the same nurse as the rude one at the reception desks.

"I'm sorry for sounding irritated miss but this has been a rough night and I thought you were the nurse from the reception desks." Drake looks up towards the nurse giving her an apologetic smile.

"Please do not apologise sir I think anyone in your situation would be a bit irritated and when it comes to nurse Davis I completely understand." She gives him a nod and turns to pick up Charlene's charts.

Standing up from the chair stretching himself he bends down and plants a kiss on top of Charlene's forehead.

"I promise you Charlene I will get the one responsible for what happened to you!" Drake softly whispers. Lifting himself up Drake looks to the nurse as she is busy making notes in Charlene's chart.

"How is she doing?" Drake moves over to the nurse.

"There is no improvement, sir. I am truly sorry. Why don't you go home and get some rest? There is nothing much that you can do for her now." Before reaching the door on her way out the nurse turns around.

"I do pray that she will make it through this and please sir believe in miracles because now a day that is all we have going for us." She gives him a smile and disappears out the door.

Moving through the doors entering the waiting room Drake finds Mary sleeping on a couch in the far corner of the room. The waiting room looks deserted with only one or two lost souls still hanging around and clinging to whatever hope is left. Mary looks like she has been here waiting the whole night for him. Why didn't she call or messaged him like he has asked her to do?

Sitting up slowly from her position she has taken by falling asleep Mary blinks her eyes a couple of times to adjust them to the bright fluorescent lights of the waiting room. Jumping up from her couch and straightening herself she looks up towards Drake as he stands towering over her. With his black hair tussled and his crystal blue eyes looking as faded and tired as ever he stares down at her with a worried expression on his already tiresome face. Drake turns towards the chair next to the couch and shows Mary to take a seat. He is still wearing his black tailored suite from yesterday, a bit wrinkly but it still looks good on him.

He did already remove his dark purple tie when he followed the ambulance to the hospital. With his collar flared wide open of his crisp white shirt and a bit of chest hair showing this man still looks like a Greek god no matter the circumstances. Mary thinks to herself as she moves towards the couch like Drake is gesturing her to do.

"Have you been here the whole night?" Drake looks towards Mary feeling very sorry for letting her wait on him the whole night.

"Not the whole night but some of it, Mr Black." Mary hands him the bag with Charlene's things inside.

"I hope I brought with the correct things? How is she doing?"

"I'm sure that whatever you brought her she will be happy with. And there is still no change to her condition, thank you for asking Mary." Drake gets up from the chair and as he moves back towards the door to go back to Charlene he turns to face Mary.

"Please do go home Mary and get some sleep. You have done more than enough and I really do appreciate all of it, I'm sure that Miss Stanley shares the same appreciation."

"Thank you so much and please Mr Black you yourself need to go home and get some rest." Mary gets up from the couch and hands back the keys to Drake. Waving a small goodbye towards him she heads for the hospitals main entrance.
