The roses were a soft pink color. Their delicate beauty seemed to make this moment even more special to Sam. The ring in his pocket was growing heavy, and he could barely contain his excitement. Tonight, he would propose to his girlfriend.
Many people had told him to wait. They'd say 'You're so young. Why don't you take some time and explore the world?' But Sam would reply with 'Because I want the one I love to be by my side.'
His heart began to race as he stepped onto her porch. The light from the windows were a soft warm glow, which gave him a little comfort. He raised his hand to knock, but paused once he heard muffled voices. He just shrugged it off, assuming her parents were home. He knocked.
The voices stopped, and there was a shuffle and a slamming door. Then the front door opened.
"Oh, Sam!" Jessica exclaimed, chuckling nervously. She tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. She always did that when she was hiding something, so Sam gave her a suspicious look. "What are you doing here?"
"Our...date." Sam frowned. "You forgot?" He felt his heart clench in his chest. He had spent a few months planning this night, and she had forgotten about it.
"I'm so sorry." Jessica pinched the bridge of her nose. "It's just, I've studying for finals and it slipped my mind. Can we do this another night?" She tucked another lock of hair behind her ear.
"I..." He was speechless. What was he supposed to say to that? He put so much time and money into this night, and he was so excited for it.
"Jess, who the hell is that?" A voice grumbled. A man came up behind Jessica and slid an arm around her waist.
"I told you to stay in the bathroom." Jessica hissed, panic appearing on her face.
The man looked at Sam and scoffed, rolling his eyes. "Oh, is this Sam?" He then laughed. "Why don't you tell him, Jess? So we can finally become public?"
Jessica bit her lip, tears filling her eyes. "Sam... I love someone else. I should have told you sooner, but I didn't want to hurt you. Please... don't hate me."
"How long has this been going on?" Sam asked in a whispery voice. He could feel his heart shattering to pieces. This was supposed to be the best moment of his entire life.
"A year." She said hesitantly. A year. They had been dating since their sophomore year of college, and they were on their senior year now. Two and a half years, and she spent a whole one in love with someone else. "Sam?"
Without realizing it, her had crushed the flowers against his chest. He swallowed thickly, looking away from her. "Have a good life."
That had happened nearly a month ago, yet Sam was still crushed over it. It didn't help that he had to see Jessica and her new boyfriend making out in some of his classes.
He didn't necessarily miss Jessica, he just still felt hurt over it. By now he was over her... But that didn't stop the whole situation from leaving a scar on him. At least he had had his brother and his fiance to help him through it.
Currently Sam was in his art class. He wasn't any good at drawing humans or anything, but he did have a knack for creating pretty scenery, animals, and other kinds of objects.
Right now he was working on a painting a Sweets shop. there was one up the street from where he lived called "The Tricksters Treats". He'd never been in there before, but he liked to gaze in every time he passed it. For some reason he felt drawn to the place, but that was probably because it was kind of pretty to look at.
Sam frowned once he realized that he was out of red paint and turned to the guy next to him, who had been painting a platypus with short wings. He was pretty short, with golden hair and beautiful matching eyes.
Wait, did he just think they were beautiful?
"What's up, Gigantor?" The guy gave him a questioning look, probably because Sam had been staring at him.
"Um, I ran out of red paint. Do you mind if I borrow some of yours?" He asked.
"Yeah, su-" He seemed to pause, narrowing his eyes at Sam's painting before smirking. "Nice picture."
Sam took some of his red paint and continued. "It's a sweets shop that I live near. I don't know why, but I've always wanted to paint it."
"I go there all the time. You should really stop in some time, It's great." He was smiling now, and amused look in his eyes. Sam was too busy painting to notice it.
"Yeah, maybe I will. Oh, I'm Sam by the way."
"Gabriel."

Sam closed the door to his dorm room, finally glad to be finished with his assignment. It was around 6, so he just decided to take a walk.
He felt a sudden warmth as he passed Tricksters Treats, pausing when he caught a flash of gold. Standing behind the counter was Gabriel himself.
Sam rushed inside, regretting it as soon as everyone's eyes landed on him. He ducked his head and strolled to the counter.
"Heya Moose." Gabriel greeted, grinning at him. "So you've finally decided to stop by?"
"Yeah. You never said that you worked here." He gave him a puzzled look.
Gabriel leaned forward on the counter, chuckling. "I don't just work here, I own the place. And I'm always hiring eye candy." He winked at him.
Sam blushed at him, standing there awkwardly, unsure what to say.
So of course Gabriel felt the need to break the silence. "Did you sit in sugar? Because you have a pretty sweet ass."
Sam nearly choked. "Excuse me?"
"Hershey factories make millions of kisses a day, but I'm asking for only one."
Gabriel was smirking at him now, and Sam had no idea what to do.
"You make me melt like hot fudge on a sundae."
Sam laughed nervously. "What are you doing?"
Gabriel rolled his eyes. "Oh my Dad, isn't obvious? I'm flirting with you."
"But why?"
Gabriel literally put his face in his hands. "I don't know, probably because I find you attractive and I genuinely like you?"
Sam looked at him in surprise.
"Got any raisins?" He suddenly asked.
Sam blinked at him. "Um, no."
"How about a date?" He grinned at Sam, wiggling his eyebrows. "C'mon Sammy."
"First, don't call me Sam. And second... Fine. Just no more pickup lines." He gave him a shy smile.
"Great, I'll pick you up at 5 tomorrow." Gabriel paused to pop a handful of skittles in his mouth.
"I've got skittles in my mouth, wanna taste the rainbow?"
"GABE!"
