For @priscillajoness
Fuck today.
Fuck my life.
Fuck it all.
I had my dream job. I went to school and graduated a year before my class for this one job that I've been waiting for since I was six.
And I got fired.
Fired.
And to make it worse, I was supposed to get my promotion today.
Becoming a lawyer was the most humbling (and excruciating) process I've ever endured. It taught me to be honest and law-abiding so that when I advocate for someone, they can trust me.
And apperantly on the last case, the client didn't trust me.
So much so, that my boss fired me because I don't "follow the handbook".
Well, I'm sorry for "not following a handbook" just because I wanted to meet with a client at a fancy restaurant.
I cleared my thoughts and entered the house, dropping my jacket, shoes, and keys on the couch and going into the kitchen for the bottle of Merlot.
I didn't need a glass.
I popped the bottle open and took a swig.
I never, ever thought in my life that I'd get fired from my dream job. And once you're fired at one firm, your name spreads. So now they all know that I got fired for taking my client (who was the wife of a drive-by victim) to Olive Garden for lunch.
Quiet tears ran down my face.
I was the best damn lawyer that firm ever had. Or, at least I thought I was.
My husband Justin walked into the kitchen and saw me. "Hey," he walked to me. "What's wrong?"
"It's nothing." I mumbled and waltzed atound him to go upstairs. I set the bottle on the dresser and grabbed some comfortable clothes to change into.
"C'mon Priss," he sat next to me on the bed while I pathetically continued to drink. "Stop that." He took it.
Hoe.
"Give it!" I exclaimed.
"No, not until you tell me what's wrong."
"No."
"Why won't you tell me? It must be something bad, isn't it?"
I nodded.
"Then what?"
My bottom lip trembled.
Here come the waterworks, yay.
(note sarcasm)"I got fired today." I sobbed.
He pulled me into his lap. "Oh, baby."
He mumbled, rubbing my back. "What'd they say?""Y'know that one girl, the wife?" He nodded. "She told them that I was unprofessional by buying her dinner at Olive Garden."
"What?"
"I was just trying to be nice! She was grieving, I figured she needed someone there for her, but if I knew that was going to get me fired I wouldn't've done it." I cried some more.
"Baby girl, it's okay."
"No it's not! All the firms have intel on me now, they're not going to hire someone who can't keep professional on a case!"
"Mama, listen." He sighed. "Yeah, okay, I get it. And I've been there. This is the job you've been dreaming about for years. And now you think that no one will want you anymore from one bad experience."
"Well, yeah."
"I know you're an amazing lawyer because you were helping on a lot of my cases. But from those bad experiences I bounced back, didn't I?" I nodded. "I know you can too. You've got this... this determination that I promise you no one else in any firm has."
I smiled and wrapped my arms around his neck. "Thank you." I said.
"You know I'm always here for you no matter what."
