It's way too hot for this. Too hot to go outside, too hot to hang out with people, too hot to pack.
"You ready yet, Krissy?" I hear a voice.
"I told you to never call me that." I shout.
"What's wrong with it? It's been your nickname since you were little." My mother says as she enters my room.
"It's like you're asking me to hate you. I'm not a kid anymore. Don't come in my room either." I mutter.
"Won't be your room for long!" My brother calls. He enters my room too just to piss me off.
"Keep your mouth shut. At least I'm actually moving out. Unlike a certain older brother I know." I say. He steps over to me and pulls my red beanie off my head. He holds it above my head and waves it like a flag for me to catch.
"Give it back, Brennan." I complain. I jump to try to get a better reach, but he just jumps with me.
"Oh, just give her back her hat, Bren." My mother scolds. He lets out a defeated sigh as he drops it on my face. I stick out my tongue at him like a child.
He wraps his arm around my neck putting me in a choke hold. "I just can't believe my little baby sister is on her way to college." He praises. I slide out of his hold and replace my hat.
"Unlike you, you bum." I tease. He's never wanted to go to college simply because he doesn't know what to do. He has nearly no skills of any value other than drumming.
"Least I'm not costing a fortune."
"I got paid for most of it myself, you dick!" I throw a pillow at him.
"Watch your language! Are you almost done packing, Krista? We need to go." My mother warns.
"Don't call me that either." My mood drops.
"I just need to get a few more things. My clothes are finished. I just need some stuff to remember home." I mumble.
"I really wish you would take out all of those piercings, dear. They aren't becoming on a young lady like yourself." She looks at me.
"Mom, I've had these since freshman year. They're staying." I groan. I have a lip ring on the right half of my face, nose stud on the left, eyebrow piercing on the right, small gauges, and double piercings just above the gauges. Mother hates every single one of them and I love it.
"What if you freak out your roommate?" Brennan cuts in.
"What if I have no roomie, or they don't mind them?" I retort with a smile. They're being too critical over this. I do not care what anybody has to say about how I look.
I have dark brown hair that reaches just below my shoulders with a lot of layers. I don't mind the color so much like other girls might. I have natural black, blond, and red highlights that keep it interesting. My skin is a light tan, but it burns pretty easily so sitting in the sun isn't my favorite thing to do. I wear a lot of dark clothes mainly from Hot Topic, but I can still pull off the 'girly' look despite all my piercings. My eyes are pretty boring. Just a dark brown, nothing special about them.
"Kris." Brennan waves his hands in my face.
"What?? What do you want?" I shake my head.
"You ready yet? It's almost 10:30 and Mom wants to load up all your stuff." He says.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. I just gotta load up my backpack with some stuff. Take the bags for me please? I don't have enough muscle to carry those all by myself." I said in my baby voice.
"Well, that's one thing you're right about." He smiles. He grabs my suitcases and walks out the door.
"What to bring." I mumble. I walk around my room with my black Jansport in hand searching for anything to fill it with. I grab some of the books I've already read so many times. I find my old book full of the works of Shakespeare and figure it's worth bringing. I bring an old book I got when I was seven teaching how to make bracelets out of colored string. Never know when the ones I have now will break.
