It was an ordinary day on Motonui, everyone doing their jobs at the island, the weather spreading calm and relaxation through the people as they continued about their day. Nothing out of place to cause any stir of trouble.
Except for Moana.
The 3 year-old was watching as his mother, Sina, collected the coconuts along with other villagers, playing with his seashells that he collects every time he has a chance to escape to the shore.
His father, the village chief, always spoke his discomfort and worry every time his son would wonder to the shore on the island, fearing the sea currents would drag him under. Though this time, he went back to the shore but not to collect more seashells or for his liking. His curiosity peaked as he hard a sound that was carried through the winds.
The sound of a crying baby.
He looked up when he heard the crying, though everyone else was too preoccupied to listen. He looked to his right to see a path that leads to the beach (Which, by the age of three, he knows by heart) and on the shore, he saw a very small raft with a bundle in it.
Moana turned to look at his mother to see that she had her back to him, her attention on the trees as she collected coconuts. In other words, the perfect escape. Raising himself to his two chubby legs, he ran down the path and towards the bundle, which was now fidgeting around the raft, their crying getting louder and louder which each step he took closer.
When he finally reached it, he peeked inside to see a 3 year-old girl covered in a blanket, she had brown curls that looked intangible but what caught his attention the most were her eyes, they were like none he has ever seen, they were grey. The same kind of grey you see in clouds on a breezy day.
When her eyes met his, her crying came short in sniffs as she wiped at her eyes, Moana smiled happily at her as he jumped up and down in excitement, content for meeting a new friend. His happiness seemed to be contagious as she smiled in return.
Meanwhile, Chief Tui was just walking towards his beautiful family after a hard day of work when he noticed a certain someone missing.
His heart spiked up as he looked down the path towards the shore on the beach, only to find Moana going against his rule for the hundredth time, jumping up and down as his laughter spread all around him.
"Moana!"
He immediately ran over, all calm that was in his system moments before had vanished with panic replacing it. His son turned to look behind him in surprise and fear before smiling as he motioned at something behind him for his father to see.
Tui instinctively reached out to pick up his son before taking a peek at what appeared to be a poorly-made raft, "Your mother and I have told you not to go back here. It's dangerous-"
His jaw dropped as he stopped mid-sentence, tightening his hold on Moana. He didn't trust his body to not drop his son as his mind reeled at what he saw inside. Earlier, when his mother told him that today would be an exciting day, he believed it was because of the weather. He did not find anything about this exciting. ~-~-~-~-~~-~-~-~-~~-~-~-~-~~-~-~-~-~~-~-~-~-~~-~-~-~-~~-~-~-~-~~-~-~-~-~~-~-~-~-~~-~-~-~-~~-~-~
"You found her where?!"
Tui had approached Sina inmediatley after he encountered Moana and the girl, this not being in his area of expertise (He was still figuring out how to be a dad). Sina was at first shocked but overcame that a lot faster than her husband as she led them towards their home, both of them not answering questions as others noticed the unfamiliar girl resting in their chief's arms. Now Tui was explaining to his wife on how he encountered the grey-eyed girl, while on the other side of the room, she and Moana were babbling away gibberish at each other as the boy showed her his collection of seashells.
"On the shore in a raft" Tui repeated as Sina ran her hands through her hair, "I found her- well to be exact, Moana found her first. The blanket was the only thing she had"
"Well what are we going to do? Keep and raise her as one of our own?" She glanced over to the children as her son blowed into a conch shell and the girl tilted her head with interest.
Moana struggled to make a noise out of his shell like the warriors his father told him in stories before going to sleep. He blew and blew but the shell only let out tiny squeak, he looked bummed out as he handed it over to his new friend, his lower lip trembling slightly.
"It would be nice if Moana had a friend" Tui said as he too observed the children play around, wrapping an arm around his wife's shoulder and gently pulling her to his side.
Moana had a hard time making friends on the island since he also expressed his dream to go to the sea, unlike the other children his age, who preferred staying on dry land. His mischief-like attitude also caused the other children to keep some distance from him since they didn't desire to cause any kind of trouble. But Tui was right, Moana has never showed anyone his favorite seashell collections, except for his parents and Grandmother Tala. For him to open up himself to someone his own age was something pretty good to look at.
The peaceful silence was broken by a loud sound that reminding them of a flute with too much air being inserted into it. Along with it, a sudden breeze blew their hair back and stumbled them slightly as Moana was forced onto his back. The adults, after making sure their son wasn't injured, snapped their heads to look at the girl as she drew her lips from the shell and placed it gently down beside her, a smile on her face.
Moana blinked a few times before sitting up, a smile growing big on his features as he laughed, clapping his hands to the sound that she managed to emit from the shell. She looked down at his hands in confusion, her nose scrunching up, before looking down at her own.
She laughs as she also claps along with him, but as soon as she claps, the wind came back but Tui and Sina noticed that it was coming from inside the room. As the air blew open the entrance, flapping in the wind, they glanced outside to see that there wasn't any breeze occurring outside, the palm trees standing still as possible.
Wide-eyed, they looked back at the girl's hands, a sudden realization coming to their minds. Moana didn't mind his firend's new-found discovered ability as he continued to clap with her.
"Raising a girl with the ability to control air" Sina said in shock as she looked up at her husband, "What could go wrong?" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
