THREE DAYS

Day 1

Three short days, that’s all I had. Three days to make him fall in love with me again. Once again I found myself sitting on the beach where all the memories begun. The sand soft, embracing my skin as I breathed in the fresh salty air, the roar of the waves playing in the background as my thoughts overpowered. It was a year today, and in my heart I knew I had to see him.

We chased his football on the beach in the cool summer’s night; the only light was that from the full moon dancing around our bodies. Closer and closer we come to the newness of a first kiss. Two teenagers together as one, waited on by friends, laughing and enjoying each other’s company, not aware of what was to come. Both knowing too well that they might not see each other again, they continued to giggle and embrace each other.

It felt like yesterday since I last heard his voice on the phone. We used to talk every night, about the future, about how happy we were. Even though the whole world believed it was stupid to be together, that we lived to far away. We ignored them until the every last phone call.

“I think we should break up” he said it was the first time I had heard his voice in a week.

“What do you mean break up?” I felt like someone had punched me through the chest.

“It’s not working; we haven’t seen each other in months, it’s not working…”

After returning back to my camping area and setting up my bedroom for the next three days, I adventured back to the beach hoping that maybe he had arrived. Deep breaths, remember to breathe, I told myself as I made my way up the hill and finally to the beach. There he was, lying perfectly on the sand with his brother and two mysterious girls that I had never seen before. I couldn’t believe that he was there, after all this time. They all looked up as I walked past them; I heard my name as I walked into the distance. Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god. Breathe.

“We are forever okay don’t forget that, you mean everything to me, you are my world, you’re beautiful, why can’t you live closer, I really want to see you again, I love you, I think we should break up, all I got out of the relationship was a 100 dollar phone bill, bye.”

All the memories were flooding back. I ran and ran and ran but they still screamed in my head. Why did this have to be so hard, why were all the old wounds opening up. Hadn’t I suffered enough already? The sun slowly started to disappear behind the hill as I walked back to the caravan park little did I notice a certain someone waiting for me.

“Ellie?” I heard from behind me. I turned around and saw him standing right before me. Looking the same as a year ago, the same tall, tanned, skinny brown headed boy I had fallen in love with.

“Lucas?” I couldn't help but feel the butterflies return that I had long been missing.

“I was going to play a game of cricket, would you like to join me and my cousins?” He pointed over to the park and there were the two mysterious girls from the beach earlier.

“Sure?” I couldn’t believe we were talking again. I followed him over to his cousins and we played cricket for about two seconds before the older cousin stormed off angry that the game wasn’t going her way.

“Sorry about her she’s a bit moody at the moment. How have you been?” He said as he sat down with the remanding cousin, inviting me to join them.

“Yeah, I’ve been good” I lied as I sat down beside him, knowing too well I was going to have to leave soon, “What about yourself?”

“Yeah, I’ve been great!” He said as I felt the awkwardness fill the air.
