Wiping down the last table of the diner I realized it was the end of my shift. "Finally." I sighed to myself. I turned the 'open' sign to closed before taking off my apron. "Bye Karen, see you tomorrow." I yelled before grabbing my things and leaving, making my way down to the playground.
"Hey Luke." I smiled, taking a seat on the picnic table, beside the basketball court. "Hey." Lucas, my best friend, replied shooting the ball, making it straight into the hoop. "Why are we always out here so late at night?" I asked before letting out a strangled yawn. "Not enough time in a day, I guess." He shrugged before throwing the ball, making it into the hoop, again. "I don't see why you spend all your extra time out here, you're already phenomenal at this game." I shrugged, standing up. "Because, maybe unlike some people, I have nothing else to do." He shrugged before walking over to me. "So you don't want to hang out with me?" I asked, faking a hurt look. "I never said that." He smiled, "You know I love you." He chuckled throwing the ball in my direction. I blew him a kiss before picking up the basketball and attempting to make a basket. I failed, miserably. He held back a chuckle before grabbing the ball and walking towards me. "Let's go." He said throwing an arm around my shoulder.
"Remind me why we're friends again?" I joked, poking Lucas's side slightly, causing him to jump away. "Because I'm great." He joked. "Yeah, yeah." I rolled my eyes in a playful matter. "Thanks for walking me home, I'll see you tomorrow Luke." I smiled before giving him a hug. He hugged back before turning around and walking back in the direction of his house.
I woke up the next morning with 15+ texts from Lucas. Instead of replying I just called him. "What did you want Lucas? You know I was sleeping, right?" I asked in a sarcastic tone. "You'll never guess who stopped by the playground to talk to me." He said, sounding a bit excited. "Who?" I asked, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. "Whitey. He wants me to join the team." At this I nearly dropped the phone. "Riley, you still there?" "Yeah! You said yes, right?" I asked still in shock. "I told him I'd think about it." He sighed. "Why didn't you accept? You are amazing." I smiled even though he couldn't see it. I could tell he was smiling too by the way he was talking. "I wanted to talk to my mom about it first, he's giving me until Monday." Came his reply. "That means you have two days to talk to your mom and to give Whitey an answer. Luke, talk to her now and I'll see you later." I told him before hanging up.
