Emergency lights flood the crash sight on the narrow country road. The spinning beams slip through the leaves of the treeline. Light and shadow dance and war across the features of a woman, standing concealed within the forest's safe embrace from the emergency workers. They swarm the area like ants, running and shouting at one another; fighting a battle that was rigged to fail from the beginning. The flames from the gnarled, crushed metal husk that used to be a car glow brightly as they slowly climb higher in the chilled night sky. None of them notice the man who leaves the frenzy, their eyes skip over him without leaving so much as an impression of a shadow. His silent steps scarcely move the underbrush as he makes his way towards the hidden woman. They stand in silence watching the people scurry, their silhouettes racing in front of the flames. He reaches out and takes her hand in his, squeezing her fingers gently.

"Are you sure about this?" Her eyes flick to his face before she shakes her head, a silver line shimmering along her eyes in the moving light. A single sterling drop falls from her lower lashes onto her cheek, delicately he wipes it away. She heaves a shuddering sigh and leans into him, relishing the feeling of his arms as they move to wrap around her.

"I know it's the best way to protect her, but it still feels wrong." She rests her head against his chest.  The pair stand in each others embrace as tears silently slide down her cheeks. With a shuddering breath she withdraws from his warmth and turns from the road.
