Since I've just been writing a load of fluffy one shots, here's an angsty one to mix it up ^^

Inspired by a roleplay my friends and I did a while back

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Korea stared at the flat lining monitor, Taiwan’s hand still clamped in his sweaty grip. No. It couldn’t be happening. Not to her. China was standing by the door, the tea he had bought slipping from his hands to crash onto the floor and Hong Kong was sitting next to Iceland, his mouth agape with shock, his eyes widening.

“TAI!” Korea yelled, desperately shaking the limp girl. “TAI WAKE UP!” Tears pricked at his eyes, blurring his vision as he shoved her, trying to convince himself that the machinery was faulty, that it was lying. Taiwan couldn’t possibly be-

No. He couldn’t think about it. It couldn’t be true.

“TAI STOP FOOLING AROUND! Stop it... Wake up...” more tears trickled down his cheeks, dripping onto the dull green hospital bed. Doctors and nurses now swarmed the room, chattering urgently. Hong Kong was sobbing, clutching Iceland to him as if he were his lifeline, clenching his fist tightly. China stood stock still, silently crying with one hand on Hong Kong’s shoulder. Korea found himself swept aside as more hospital staff crowded around the bed, Tai’s comatose form obscured by all the people. Korea tapped on one persons back.

“Y-you can do it right? You can save her? She’s not really gonna die, is she?!” he choked out, craning to see his sister. “P-please save Tai... please...”

The doctors worked for hours, trying to save the poor girl, but her body stayed as limp as ever and her eyes stayed resolutely closed. No one said anything, but they all knew it was hopeless. In the early hours of the morning, they declared her dead, and left the room to allow the family some privacy. No-one could work up the courage to look at her, until Korea ambled slowly towards her. Her face was peaceful, no trace left of the pain that had haunted her for days. He took her hand and sat beside her, staring at her, waiting for her eyes to open and a cheerful smile to work its way onto her face.

“Tai... How could this happen...” he whispered hoarsely, still not believing that his sister would never open her eyes again. That she would never greet him in the morning, or yell at him when he got on her nerves. She was gone for good.

He felt a soft hand and turned around to see China, his eyes bright with unshed tears. He slammed into his big brother, grabbing the front of his top and crying into it, ugly sobs wracking his body as he wailed. He felt China’s arms wrap around him in a broken attempt to comfort him. Iceland had pulled Hong Kong into his lap, and was stroking his hair, humming softly in Icelandic. Nobody spoke. No-one could find the words through the crippling agony of grief.

“T-tai...” Korea whimpered. “W-why. Why did this have to happen. WHY!” he screamed in anguish, face screwed up with terror and pain. “Tai...” he fell to his knees and wept bitterly. Hong Kong was shaking, his hand clasped painfully around Iceland’s.

“No...” he said quietly, his voice cracking “It shouldn’t be like this.”

“I-I can’t believe she’s gone, aru...” China murmured as if in a dream, looking lost and terrified. They stayed like that for a while until the body was taken away and they were left to find their way home.

It was quiet without Taiwan, her usual enthusiasm and boundless energy noticeably missing. No-one had much contact with each other for the first week, each locked in their room, mourning. No more loud anime being played while they tried to work, and no more singing at insane times in the morning. Korea barely ate, and he knew the others fared no better. He couldn’t imagine life without Taiwan and barely dragged himself out of bed in the morning. Maybe someday the ache in his heart would subside, but for now, it felt like there was a gaping hole in his chest. One day he’d be able to think about her without crying, but he knew it would always hurt.
