As the sun began to set over the horizon it left a pink glow in the sky, clouds glowing in the sky above the small town of Lakedale. The small town had a tight net community of family owned businesses. Businesses that have been there since the town was built in the eighteenth century.
In the centre of the small town was a row of shops on either side of the road that lead into the town and extended to the end with small roads extending off of them. At the end of these tree roots style roads were small town houses that were old fashioned, purposely built family homes. Families have lived in these homes for centuries, passing each house down to each generation.
As the sky lit up pink with the rays of the sun setting on the horizon of the Atlantic ocean, with a brisk cool autumnal breeze brushing against the trees and the skin of the passing townspeople as they walked towards their homes, coming home from their family owned businesses to sit down and have dinner with their families.
A small, family owned bakery with the name 'Belle's Bakery' written above the doorway in a fancy, handwritten style lettering. Underneath the name of the bakery with small readable writing read 'established in 1765', and still it ran and was popular with the townspeople. It sat between two other family owned businesses, 'Bentley Books' and 'Hudson Hardware', two family owned stores that had been there even longer than Belle's Bakery.
All the lights began to switch off from the once brightly lit bakery. Appearing in the doorway was a young beautiful brunette. She twisted the 'Open' sign around. 'Closed' was now pressed up against the window. She opened the door and stepped out of the door. She closed the wooden glass down behind her and locked up behind her. Her denim jeans were covered with flour and her black and white sneakers had specks of chocolate frosting splashed across it.
As she stepped onto the street, a light, cold breeze from the Atlantic Ocean brushed up against her soft cheeks. She shuddered and pulled her leather jacket tighter to her and ducked her head behind her collars. She raised her hand up to her hair as she pulled tightly onto her loose ponytail. Her eyes wandered the street as the family owned business staff began to exit from their stores. She flashed a soft and sweet smile at all of the passerby's. The elderly gentlemen would tip their hats in her direction followed by a soft smile. Some would open their mouths and let out a sound. "Good night", some would say and she would repeat the phrase back at them followed by her sweet and innocent smile.
As she made her way up one of the tree root styled roads, she arrived at a smaller family home with a white wooden picket fence around it. She pushed open the gate as she made her way up the white wooden steps that matched the picket fence around it. As she arrived at the doorway her phone began to ring in her jeans pocket. She sighed and rolled her eyes gently as she reached into her pocket. Pulling the phone to her ear she didn't have to look at the caller ID, she already knew who would be calling her.
"Hey, mom, what's up?" She asked.
"I'm just checking that you've made it home." Brenda said.
"Mom, you don't have to call me every time I'm coming home from work. It's not like I'm a kid anymore. And another thing, what's gonna happen in this town? I literally live five minutes away from the store. You'd think that I still lived at home with you. You do recall that I am twenty-five, right?"
"Yes, I do recall that, but that doesn't mean that I have to stop worrying about my little girl, now does it?"
She sighed. "I guess not." She paused for a moment as she grabbed her keys out of her pocket and a thought that she didn't want to think about popped into her head. She swallowed back the emotional lump that was building up in her throat. "How's dad?" She said gently, almost like a whisper as she opened the door of her home.
