Hello, we are the girls from the VEX IQ team 359A, The Hawaiian Kids. Our names are Rhea Mae Arellano and Emma Haas. This is our very first year of robotics! Before we started robotics, we didn't know each other at all. Now though, we are best friends! We grew really close because we are often staying late to work on our team's robot. This year there are more boys than girls on the team. During our time on this team we had gone through many ups and downs. On this team, the boys are usually telling us what to do, but we stand our ground and tell them that they have to help us out too because we are one team. Even though they tell us what to do, and boss us around, we work harder than them to stand out and show that robotics is not only for boys but girls can be in robotics too.
Our whole team. Rhea is in the middle, and Emma is on the right.
This is our first year in robotics, so we are in VEX IQ. In VEX IQ, there are STEM researchers. STEM researchers have to find a problem that relates to the topic and research ways to solve this problem. Since there is only five people on this year's team, we had to divide the jobs up evenly. Of course the boys are all builders, programmers, and even one of our drivers. Emma ended up becoming the main STEM researcher, and Rhea is the only documenter. Emma mainly does STEM with Levi helping her present and come up with ideas to solve the problem. Rhea does all of our documentation, with very little help. The boys choose to do the more "challenging" jobs, such as driving, programming, and building. Rhea and Emma chose to become builders, and Rhea even drives! Now, Rhea is even learning how to program, and she is our backup programmer. Even if we are girls, we can do anything that we want to do as long as we put our mind to it. For example, Rhea has many jobs on our team, she not only builds, drives, and does documentation, but she also does our team inventory, organizes it in her spare time to make sure we can find all of the parts we need. Without us, the team would fall apart, or the team wouldn't function very well.
