Arianna's P.O.V
I cautiously waded into the small pond until I was about waist deep. The icy cold water nipped my legs but I didn’t care, it felt so good. I shivered happily as the smooth water tickled my skin, cleansing my wounds and washing away my old life. Then I plunged into the pond until I was floating under water and ran my fingers through my long hair. As I broke the surface to inhale more air. I heard a soft rustle, in alarm, I swiftly swam to the shore and wrapped my skirt around my body.
In the clearing, just below the palace’s balcony was a large pile of clothes, I padded over to them silently, to avoid being seen and on top was a crumpled note.
‘I saw you yesterday by the pond, I am sure that you saw me too. You are beautiful, and I really wish that one day, we will meet, although due to our circumstances, it could be unlikely. I do not mean to be offensive or prying in any way but I thought you could do with some new clothes so I have had some tailored for you. My name is Damen, please reply and leave the note where you found it, I left a quill in the pile.
P.S. I hope we will meet sometime soon’.
I must have analysed every letter twice before I finally glanced over to the pile next to me. I examined its contents and found around ten beautiful dresses, made of satin, taffeta, silk and covered in dainty designs. There was also a small, ivy comb, a dark green, fur lined cloak and as promised a large quill pen made from a rich blue feather with ink. I chose a daffodil yellow dress with a pretty network of gold threads sewed throughout the corset and a low, square neckline. Then I tried on the cloak. It was perfect fit and the fur was so soft and warm I never wanted to take it off. All I could think about was how glorious life in the palace must be and how badly I wanted to live there with Damen and share his lavish lifestyle.
Eventually I opened the pot of ink and dabbed the quill into it, beginning to compose my note.
I sat as straight as I could so that I was just tall enough to write on the incredibly high, wooden desk as I swirled my quill around in the dark pool of ink, staining the nib until it was dripping. Then I strained my neck, eager to snatch a view of the chalky blackboard filled with letters, and slowly began to copy. I pressed too hard on a full stop and the nib split, causing clumsy speckles of ink to cover my paper and skin. I looked down to my hands in a sense of failure and shame, but was surprised to find that they were clean.
I began to write.
‘Damen, my name is Arianna. I cannot thank you enough for the clothes as without them, I would be in despair. Although they are allot more expensive than anything I have ever owned. I would really love to meet you as I am lonely, here in the forest, however lovely it may be’.
I folded the note and lay it on the ground, kissed it tenderly then slipped away with my gifts.
