"Dean, you've been in the bathroom for an hour. It's time to go!" I shout at Dean from downstairs. "Coming babe."
Dean comes down the stairs wearing a fancy suit and tie with dress shoes and his hair slicked back with obviously too much hair gel.
"Dean. We are going to a barbeque. There was no need to dress up." I tell him giggling at his worried expression.
"Sorry Taylor, I just want your folks to like me. I'll go back and change." He starts to head back up the, but I grab his hand before he reaches the third step.
"Dean, they'll love you, I promise. And it's too late to change, we need to leave or we're going to be late."
"But... But you look so casual, Taylor. I'll stand ou-" I silence him with a kiss. "Everything will be alright, Dean."
We both start heading to door. "Wait!" Dean yells. He runs to the kitchen and grabs a can of beer, chugs it, then runs back to me.
"What am I gonna do with you, Dean." I laugh and kiss his cheek.
~30 minutes later~
Before Dean and I get out of the car, I hand him five breath mints. "For the beer smell." I tell him.
I look down at my hands, feeling guilty. "Dean, I need to tell you something." He looks at me with worried eyes and takes my hand in his. "You can tell me anything, Tay." I sigh and tell him. "Dean, I may not have told my parents you were white." I whisper the end. I was afraid to look at him. Afraid to see if he was as angry and sad as I was. He grabs my chin and makes me look up at him. "We'll face this together, Tay. Whatever they have to say, I won't mind as long as you're by my side." He kisses me tenderly.
We both step out the car, and walk to my parents back yard. We went to talk to my sister first. "Tay, you done went and got you a fine piece of white chocolate." She laughs. "Does mom and dad know he's... You know."
I sigh "No." She rubs my back encouragingly. "Don't worry about it, sis. What's the worst that could happen?"
"You're right, Y/S/N. Dean let's go find my parents." I grab his hands and head to the grill, knowing my father would be there. Just as I see him in view, mom walks up to him and hands him a slab of ribs. Perfect.
I walk to them, all my confidence leaving with each step. "Hey mom. Dad." They look at me, then at Dean, then at me again.
"Taylor, may we talk to you in private."
"Y/B/N, come man the grill." My brother jogs over and does as told.
"Taylor, who's that?" My mother ask not so politely. "When you said you were bringing Dean to our family barbeque, I thought you meant your ex, Dean. He was such a nice, black boy." She gives you a look as she says the word black. "Mo-" I get cut off by my father.
"Tay, interracial couples are not cute these days. Do you really want mixed kids? They'll be coming to you everyday, crying because of bullies." He tells me angrily.
"Dean makes me happy, he has a good job, and we've been dating for ten months now. Y'all will just have to get used to it."
They both start yelling reasons for me to end things with Dean. I've finally had enough. "WE'RE ENGAGED!" They go quiet. I storm out before they start their rant again.
I grab Dean's hand. "Time to go." I grunt through gritted teeth. "Taylor, wait." I turn to see my father running towards us.
"I'm sorry, Tay. I jus- you know how I am." He chuckles a little. He then looks at Dean with his hand stretched out. "Welcome to the family."
Dean leans down to my height and whispers in my ear. "I glad no one noticed my outfit."
