Chapter 2

Beast

No buses came through Charity. The only visitors were truckers and the occasional family on their way to Lake Tahoe. Locals certainly weren’t used to people like me and Sonja passing through. I felt like a fucking celebrity by the time we pulled up to the diner.

It wasn’t the best looking place in town, but then, it wasn’t the worst either. That honor went to the antique shop that looked like it housed every rejected garage sale item in the county.

I handed Sonja $300. “Get yourself somethin’ to eat.”

She frowned. “I’m not that hungry.”

“Just keep it,” I told her, eager to get her out of the car.

A group of elderly people drinking coffee near the front window were giving me a nasty look. Guess they weren’t too keen on Frankenstein showing up for a burger. Still, one of them could probably give Sonja a ride to a nearby bus station.

She gulped, stuffing the bills in her pants. “You’re not coming back, are you?”

“I didn’t realize you liked me that much.”

“Maybe I would have if you’d talked more.”

“Now that’s not fair. I wasn’t the one who stopped talkin’, darlin’.”

She looked down.

“Why you goin’ to Seattle?”

“I have my reasons.”

“You wanna share ‘em with me?” A predictable silence stretched between us. “Didn’t think so.”

She grabbed the door handle but didn’t open it. “Please come back,” she whispered.

Did she really want to do this right now? Biting back a curse, I turned off the engine. “I’m not taking you to Seattle.”

“That’s alright. Wherever—”

“This is as far as I go.”

“Oh.” I didn’t realize a single syllable could sound so devastating.

“Look, I don’t know what the fuck you’re planning, but it’s not gonna work.”

She bit her bottom lip and shut her eyes.

“I can’t deal with your bullshit, darlin’. And if I try, it’s just gonna make it harder on you.”

“I understand.”

“I don’t think you do but trust me, this is best. You go in there, play some cards, make some friends. Those old folks probably have grandchildren you’ll remind them of. They’ll help you out.”
