Prologue

A long time ago there was a town in Italy by the name of Rome. Rome may be a delightful city to visit now, but in ancient times, it wasn't that great. There were two classes that made up  Roman society: The Patricians and the Plebeians. The Patricians were the upper class citizens who were more wealthy. The Plebeians were the lower class, but were the real hard workers in this society. Of course, Patricians were considered more important and had the more important jobs like senators and goverment officials, the jobs that actually made decisions on how society worked in Rome.

Chapter one

"Hey, Aulus!" My sister yelled. "Come here and help me with this bag of grain!" It was a noticeably large bag of grain that my sister, Marcella, was too young to carry by herslef.

"Marcy, let me help you." I ran over to Marcella and helped her carry the grain inside. We lived on a farm, so it was pretty spacious to store large items like these and we easily lifted the grain and put it on the shelf.

I have another sister, and her name is Vita. She is older than Marcy and I, but unfortunately she can't help me with my work.  Marcella can't help either, but she is too young to work anyway. The governent says that women who are Plebeians need to learn house work. I actually think this is very sexist. My mother says I'm one of those considerate young men, who have actual respect for women. Which is true. It's as unfair as how Patricians get actual educations when we just work, work, work till sundown.

The worst part is that Patricians get the good life. I mean, they never work like us. Plebeians also do not get as fabulous of food as Patricians get. We get bread and water. On special occasions, we might get corn, you never know.

Today was market day. This meant I got to go to the town square and get some goods.  I loved doing this because it simply gave me an excuse to get out of my laborous work.

"Make sure you are careful Aulus."  Mother said as she scrubbed some clothing.

"Yeah, I'm sure he wouldn't want to be attacked by beasts out there in the town, Ma." Vita said with sarcasm radiating throughout her.

"Don't joke about that, Vita. He could very well get hurt." My father said sternly. "You don't know who you might run into."

"Right." Vita sipped her water while rolling her eyes.

"Yeah, well I have self defense, father. I am fifteen, I think I can handle it considering that I have been going to market since I was twelve."
