Esmeralda and Anastasia grew up in the Enchanted Forest. They weren't actually sisters, but they sure considered each other to be so. Anastasia's father had left her with Lavina, Esmeralda's mother. He had enemies and wanted to protect her from them, but he did not want to leave her forever, so he gave her a necklace. It was a beautiful thing, a dark blue stone shaped like a heart with small diamonds around the edges. Anastasia never took it of, for even though she saw Lavina as her mother and Esmeralda as her sister she still wanted him to find her. Esmeralda also had a piece of jewelry that she valued, but it didn't have the same kind of history as Anastasia's neckalace. She had received a small gold ring with an emerald that matched her eyes from her mother, and since her mother died not long after she was very attached to it.
They grew up on a farm at the very edge the Enchanted Forest. It was so far from everything that no one ever visited, meaning the girls rarely met other people, but they didn't mind. The house was large and warm and built in front of a creek that in just a hundered meters led to a large lake. On one side of the house forest spread as far as the eye could see, but they didn't feel crammed because there was also a meadow and open grounds right beside the lake.
When they were younger Esmeralda started showing signs of magic, Anastasia on the other hand never developed powers, so naturally she was a bit jealous. But that never stopped the girls from being great friends. Lavina sometimes asked herself what they had in common, because they were basically opposites in both looks and personality. Esmeralda had long, golden, curly hair and dark green eyes while Anastasia had short, black hair and brown eyes that were so dark they were almost black.
When Esmeralda was down or just lonely Anastasia knew exactly where to look for her. She would either be sitting on the dock, using her magic to make shapes of water, or she would be in a clearing in the woods, drawing. Esmeralda also knew where to find Anastasia when she was down. She would be sitting by a fire at the spot where they used to camp when they were younger, or if it was a starry night she would be in the barn, she would have opened the sunroof and lay in the haystack watching the stars. This is how well they knew each other, they swore to never leave the other... and they never did.
When the Evil Queen cast the curse that transported every being in the Enchanted Forest to Storybrooke, Esmeralda and Anastasia were of course swept with the tide... But, unlike the others affected by the curse, they didn't get new names, nor were they separated from each other. Their past had been changed to fit into our world, but not changed.
The answer as to why they had been affected differently by the curse than everybody else is very simple. The curse had a mind of it's own, obeying the Queen's will but also doing what it wanted to, but it didn't know what to do with the girls. It found them to be different than everybody else so dramatically that it just left them alone, it didn't dare to do anything else, and it was right to.
These two girls are special in a way no one else has ever been, and they were more powerful than Emma Swan, the Evil Queen and even Rumpelstiltskin himself...
