*Brooke’s P.O.V.*

“Brooke! Hurry up bring the boxes that are left down to the garage!” Mum yelled from outside. It’s been a long year of preparing, but today is finally the day we move. My mum and pop split over a year ago and it has been really tough on our family ever since. Mum has decided that we are leaving NY and “starting fresh” She calls it. “I’m coming!” I picked up the last of my things and headed for the doorway. Before flipping the light switch I glanced at my now empty room. I really am going to miss it here; well I grew up in this house, In this bedroom… I never expected to leave it all behind. This past year has been a blur. Fighting, divorce, crying, and now moving. Not just moving, but all the way to California. My grandma lives in Cali, so my mum thought we should move in with her until we get back on our feet. Besides the divorce, my mum lost her job because she kept skipping. “What are you doing Brooke?” My little sister hollered from the bottom of the stairs. “I am saying my goodbyes.” I could hear her footsteps waddle away. Mum is young, she is 35, I am 16, and Isabel my sister is 10. I turned off the lights and trotted down the stairs.

Outside the movers were packing up the car and the truck. We could not bring much because it costs money to fly it all the way to California. “Brooke!” My best friend Mikayla was running down the street. She reached me and stopped to catch her breath. “I am so going to miss you” I hugged her tight and tears rolled down our cheeks. “Call me every day 365 days of the year for as long as you live” She giggled and we pulled away. I dried my tears and waved as she ran back up the street.

“Hop in!” Mum called. Her and Isabel were all ready to leave but I wasn’t. I looked at Mum and she got out of the car and ran up to me. She hugged me and pulled away with tears in her eyes.

“It’s all going to be okay Brookie.” She smiled through the pain. That is what I loved about my Mum. No matter the circumstances she always smiled to make everyone feel better. Mum was the strongest person I had ever met. “Let’s stop at KFC before we go?” She rubbed my arm and a feeling of comfort filled me. “Yeah” I smiled and got into the car, so did she.

We pulled up to KFC and Mum ordered all our favorites. It is really going to take me awhile to get used to not having KFC every night. Hopefully there is one in Cali. We parked our car in the ferry lot and got a taxi to drive us to the airport.

“How long is the flight mum?” I asked her in the security line. “I think 7 hours.” She sighed and I groaned.

We finally boarded the plane and I put my headphones in. It really did take 7 hours to get there, besides the time change and all. We had bought our new house two months in advance. We took a bus to a rental car lot; we drove out in a Toyota Camry. I watched the scenery go by. There were beautiful palm trees that reached the sky everywhere, tall buildings and welcoming houses, the sun shined bright and I felt so meant for this place. We turned into a neighborhood that was far prettier than the others. Five minutes down the road with nature and happiness all around, we pulled up to a gorgeous white house with blue shutters, a porch all the way around, and a small lake behind. It was like a dream (no joke). “Woah” Isabel and I pressed our noses to the car windows in awe. “Girls, you really want to smear the clean windows?” Mum joked. “This is amazing” My eyes were lighting up and I was filled with joy.

“Welcome Home girls”
