His Eyes

Rayna's POV

\\August 22, 2017\\

My first day of senior year, great. I had, like most others, lost my enthusiasm for school long ago, but nevertheless, I was going to attempt to look decent today.  I pulled my long brown hair into a messy ponytail and applied the slightest bit of makeup. I changed into a burgundy crop top and jeans.

The jeans I assumed were a dark blue, though they looked gray to me. I had never been able to see the color blue. My parents had taken me to see plenty of doctors but they had never been able to tell me why I couldn't see the color of the sky. I had been told it was beautiful by other people but to me, the hue didn't exist.

I slipped on my black converses, and grabbed my cellphone, racing out the door.

\\7:15 am\\

I started my 10 minute walk to school, and looked up at the sky. The clouds were white, and the sky was gray as always, with the green of the tree leaves standing out against it. As I approached West-view High, I saw the familiar sight of people loitering around the front doors. When I approached my locker I saw my friends Jess and Nick were standing at my locker, gossiping about some text Jess had received last night, I rolled my eyes and hugged them both.

"Do we have any classes together this year?" Nick asked.

Jess snatched my schedule and examined it, "Nick and I have PE together, and it looks like we all have fourth period history together." She stated, slinging my now wrinkled schedule back at me.

I checked the time on my phone, "Cool guys, but I have a five minute walk to English and the bells gonna ring in six. I'll catch you guys at lunch."

They both nodded to me, and I grabbed my English book from my locker and started on my morning trek. No one was particularly mean to me in school, but I wasn't super popular either. As I was ogling the football boys (don't judge me) I slammed into a wall, or at least what I thought was a wall, but this wall had arms. As he caught me I heard me books clatter to the ground, but they were somewhat muffled. I scanned his face, his eyes caught my attention.

It was a bright color that had never seen before. His eyes were the color that I always imagined the oceans to be, I could get lost in his eyes. They were beautiful. He seemed to be staring at me with the same interest.

"Is this what green looks like?" He whispered softly as he helped me to my feet.

"What?" I asked.

"Your eyes, are they green?" He asked, almost breathless.

"Yeah." I said, suddenly self conscious. I looked up at him again and suddenly remembered my question.

"Your eyes, they're blue right?" He nodded.

I looked down at my jeans, and they were a deep blue.

When I looked up I noticed that he was in shock too, but he was looking behind me.

"I can see it!" We both exclaimed at the same time.

"Wait you mean you've never seen blue before?" He asked me.

"No, but it seems like you've never seen green before." I replied placing my hand on my hip.

The bell rung suddenly, pulling our focus from the new found colors.

"Hey, I have English, I'll catch up with you later?"

"Actually," he smiled "I'll walk you there. I have the same class."

As we walked to class, we talked, pointing out the various greens and blues in the school.

Reaching the door, he stopped me before I went into class to take my seat, "Hey, um, do you want to meet me after school? There's this really cool coffee shop that I just discovered yesterday. It's called Eddies, and it's off of--"

I cut him off and smiled a little. "I've been going there since I was a kid, I'll meet you there at around four?"

"Yeah that's perfect." He replied. I swear I heard him breathe a sigh of relief.

Hm, I thought, I think I just got asked on a date

\\Lunch\\

"I heard you got asked out by the dreamy new boy. Spill." Jess told me as soon as I sat down for lunch.

"I have far more important news."

Nick looked at me strangely, wondering what could possibly be more important than my date.

"Nick, the shirt you're wearing is a really pretty blue."

They both looked at me with their jaws hanging almost to the floor.

"Close your mouths you look weird." I beamed at them.

"You can see blue now?!" Jess nearly squealed in my ear.

Nick squished me into a side hug.

"When did this happen?" Nick asked me.

"I don't know, I mean I just looked into Jackson's eyes earlier and his eyes were extremely blue, and I've been able to see blue ever since."

Nick and Jess exchanged confused glances.

"So he's taking you out?" Nick asked.

"Yeah, I'm supposed to meet him at Eddies this afternoon."

For the rest of the lunch period, my friends quizzed me on Jackson, and tested my sudden ability to see blue. I found myself not even really paying attention to them as I thought of his crystal blue eyes. I wanted nothing more than to run to my house and look at the ocean, to see if it looked as clear as his eyes.

\\2:15 pm\\

On my walk home I couldn't stop looking at the sky. I marveled at how perfectly the light blue of the sky blended with the white of the clouds. As I reached home, I noticed both of my parents cars in the driveway.

"Hey guys." I said as I opened the door. "That tshirt is a really pretty blue, mom."

She stopped cooking in the kitchen and looked at me, and then back at my dad.

"Sit down honey, there is something that we have to tell you about."
