When I woke up the next morning Harry was gone. My stomach rumbled and I was reminded that I hadn’t eaten in two days. I rolled over on the cot and pulled the covers further over me. It was early september, but it had already started getting cold.
The door opened and I heard Harry’s boots hit the floor as he entered.
“Wake up.” He commanded.
“ ‘m not asleep.” I grumbled. “Wish I was though.”
I sat up and my eyes widened when he handed me a napkin filled with food.
“How did you-”
“Soldier’s breakfast. No one noticed.”
“Thank you.” I dug into the food, practically shoving it into my mouth.
“Slow down, you’re going to choke.” He scolded.
I looked down at my feet ashamedly and slowed down significantly.
“I have work to do, just stay here and don't make any noise. No one should bother you. I’ll be back when it starts to get dark out. Do you need anything before I go?”
“I uhm- I have to pee.” I blushed.
He glanced around before tossing me a bottle. I looked at him appalled. Did he expect me to piss in a bottle?
“It’s that or your pants.” He shrugged. “There’s no bathroom in here and I can’t take you out there.”
I stared sadly at the bottle, eyeing it suspiciously. “Could you maybe cut the top off, so it’s easier.” I thought I’d die of embarrassment when he smirked.
He pulled out a pocket knife and cut the top of the bottle off so it was more like a cup. He handed it back to me with a chuckle.
“It’s not funny.” I grumbled.
“It is.” He laughed.
“I thought you had work to do.” I glared.
“You’re much more entertaining.”
“Quite the comedian.” I muttered under my breath.
He clapped me on the shoulder as he headed for the door, pausing to give me one last look. I could almost swear I saw something flash in his eyes as he closed the door behind him.
The window in his quarters was covered by a blanket, so I had no sense of time. All I knew what that the day dragged on. I struggled to stay warm in the cool air.
When he finally returned I saw that it was dark out. He handed me another napkin with bread and a glass of orange juice.
“Troops are going on a mission tomorrow. We’re almost out of supplies. I’m going to sneak you into the emergency care area. They have showers there. My friend Liam is going to help us.”
I nodded as I chewed on my food. It was cold, but I didn’t complain. I was just glad to have anything at all.
I couldn’t seem to tear my eyes away from him as he unbuttoned his coat and peeled his tight undershirt off. He had a nice body, probably from all the training.
“See something you like?” He smirked, unbuttoning his pants.
“Yes.” I answered automatically.
It wasn’t like me to be so cheeky, but I supposed I was going to die soon, so why not? He looked shocked by my answer, but he quickly brushed it off and stripped off his pants.
For a second I worried he would take off his boxers too, but luckily he kept them on. He flipped off the lights and crawled onto his cot.
“How are you sleeping with no clothes on? It’s freezing!”
“The cold doesn't really bother me.”
I rolled my eyes, even though he couldn’t see. I breathed out and my breath fogged the air in front of my face. The thin blanket I had wasn’t enough to keep me warm.
“H-Harry?” My teeth chattered, making it difficult to speak.
“Are you that cold?” He sat up and I heard him shuffle around before he was standing over me. “Put this on. It should keep you warm.”
He handed me a grey heavy duty jacket that looked old. I slipped it on and buried myself under the covers again.
“Try to get some sleep.” He murmured.
I watched him get back in bed, before I snuggled into the jacket. It was warm and it smelled like him, which was comforting for some strange reason.
“Harry, why did you want to be in this war?”
He didn’t seem like the type to want to kill people. He always talked about how wrong the whole thing was.
“My father is a general, it’s in my blood.” He sighed heavily. “Why did you join?”
“I was drafted.” I replied sadly. “They came to get me from my house. My sisters screamed and begged them not to take me, but I knew I had to go. I promised I’d come back.” I pinched my eyes shut as the painful memories flashed in my mind. “Now look where I am.”
He turned on his side and propped his head up on his elbow, staring at me intently. “You’re not going to die Louis. I’ll make sure of that.”
“Why do you keep saying that? You said I make you strong, but- I can’t even make myself strong. I’m just a worthless fag. I honestly don’t know why you haven’t killed me yet.”
I felt the bed dip and I watched as Harry leaned closer and whispered, “You’re not worthless Louis.” and before I knew what was happening he was kissing me.
It was the most wonderful thing I had ever experienced, right next to my mother’s tea on a cold day. Heat spread through my body, warming me up from the inside out.
I was too shocked at first to do anything, but once I pulled myself together I kissed back fervently.
Our lips moulded, fitting perfectly together. Like two puzzle pieces. I hesitantly snaked my hand around to the back of his neck. When he didn’t pull away in disgust I tugged him down so I didn’t have to keep my neck at such an awkward angle.
It ended too soon. I wanted him to kiss me forever. He stayed close, and I could feel his warm breath fanning over my face.
“You can’t tell anyone about this.”
“Who would I tell?” I murmured. “You’re the only one who talks to me like a human.”
He looked troubled for a minute, then he kissed me again. It was short and sweet, but I still missed the feeling of his rough, chapped lips.
“You still cold?”
I nodded. When he stopped kissing me it was like he sucked up the warmth and took it with him. I could feel it radiating off his bare skin. It was insane that he was only wearing boxers in that kind of weather.
He lifted the covers, letting in a burst of cold air and I yelped, curling my arms around my knees. Then the warmth came back.
He wrapped his arms around my middle and pulled me into his chest, shielding me from the bitter cold.
I blushed at the contact of my cheek on his chest, but he didn’t seem to notice. He ran a hand through my fringe, pushing it off my forehead and kissed the skin there. I cuddled into his side automatically. My toes were starting to unthaw and I wiggled them experimentally. A leg wrapped around my own, pinning it down, but I didn’t care.
As far as I was concerned, the closer the better.
I felt safe in his arms, and for the first time since I entered the war I slept soundly.
