"Damon? What can I do for you, buddy? Calling to take me up on your offer? I am really fun to hang out with," Kai says through the phone.

I shoot an annoyed glance at both Enzo and Bonnie, who are both watching and listening eagerly to our conversation.

"Yes, Kai. We so want to hang out with you," I reply unbelievably. I don't actually want him to say yes. The only reason I was even doing this was because Bonnie threatened to disable my daylight ring.

She glares at me with a silent warning in my eye.

"Wow, Damon. If I didn't know better, I'd think you didn't want to hang out with me," Kai chuckles. "How did you get my number anyway?"

"A friend of mine," I reply. "I have connections. Now, do you want to join us on our killing rampage, or not?"

"Hmm. . . such a welcomed invitation. How could I possibly refuse? Congratulations boys, you've just earned yourselves a far hotter, smarter and powerful leader to your gang!"

"Leader? You're not going to be—"

"Bye, Damon!" he concludes and hangs up the phone.

"There," I say, turning to Bonnie. "Can you leave me alone now?"

"Damon, he doesn't want to hang out with me. He doesn't trust me. You have to be the one to meet him and kill him," she argues.

"Fine, I'll go. I'll kill him and then you have to leave me alone. No humanity switch crap once I've done it. Okay?"

"No promises," she mutters under her breath. "How about, if you don't do it, I'll track you down and turn your daylight ring off. Are you ready to be stuck in the shadows again, Damon?"

"I really don't know why you're so rude to me, Bon Bon. Honestly, I've been nothing but a gentleman to you since we met," I joke, giving her my most innocent glare.

She doesn't reply — not that I was expecting her to. The way she's looking at me, I almost expect her to melt my brain with her mind right now. I take that as my cue to walk away.

"I'm not going to put up with this little devil witch without you there," I say to Enzo, who's been standing off to the side, watching Bonnie and me fight with hardly contained amusement.

"I wouldn't miss it for the world," he chuckles and follows me out the door. Just before he shuts it, he calls out over his shoulder to Bonnie. "Bye, love."

"So, what now?" I say looking out at the car park of our cheap, run-down motel.

Enzo turns to me, his dark eyes glowing. "You didn't think to maybe organise something with our little witchy friend?"

"I'm not actually going to kill him. I want to go somewhere for a meal. I'm thinking I might go for some French cuisine. Obviously a young girl, brown hair maybe? Brown eyes?"

"So basically a French version of Elena?" he laughs.

I flinch at the name again. I don't know why. The whole point of the switch is so that I'm not tied back by little vampire barbies that try to weasel their way into my heart and distract me. They make me weak. Then I remember something that Lexi told me once. Something about the switch not working properly after a few hundred years.

Geez, I'm not that old and already my switch is getting rusty.

"So, you're really not going to kill Kai?" Enzo asks, following me as I storm down the motel stairs.

"Of course not. Why would I do that? So much time and effort and for what?" I give an overly exaggerated shrug. "Nothing."

"So you don't even care about Elena? Not one bit?"

I stop in my tracks, turning around to face him. I shove him in the chest, making him stumble backwards a step. "Why do you care so much? Why do you care at all if you're humanity switch is off, as you claim it to be?"

"Oh, come on Damon. We've been running around killing every delicious smelling person we find and I'm bored. I want a challenge. I want excitement. You really have dropped to a low level with age. You're no fun anymore."

I look at him skeptically. I still don't believe that he has his humanity switch off but I do have to admit that this game of catch and eat is getting rather boring.

"Fine, I'll kill Kai. For excitement," I clarify. "Not for Elena or for anyone else."
