I was sitting in the arm chair, subconsciously unloading and reloading the gun in my hands while my eyes were locked outside. It was dark, the sky a deep blue color with rain falling from it, and the wet road - illuminated by the street lights - absent of any signs of life. The clock hanging on the wall across the room's hands were positioned at two and ten, indicating that it was 2:50. My eyes were wide open, starting to sting as I forgot to blink like I should've been.
However, with the circumstances I was in, a blink could cost me my life, or even worse, hers.
I broke my gaze from the window and glanced over at the door, where she sat with her back to the wall next to it and her hands clasped closely to her chest, hiding the knife she had in her fingers. Her head was hung low, her long, wavy, red velvet hair hiding her closed eyes and her slightly parted lips. Her breaths were shallow, the room silent as she listened intently for any disruptions.
The corner of my lip perked up, thinking about our time together. As I traveled down the path I was on, I never expected her to be there, or that I wouldn't just pass by her, but instead be picked up by her and brought along on a ride I didn't have a ticket for. Had she not picked me up, I don't know where I'd be. I certainly wouldn't be in the dim two-room apartment I was locked in, and I highly doubt that I would still be breathing.
Just then, to snap me out of the daze I'd fallen into, her head snapped up and she pointed to the window. I looked out and saw that a car had pulled up to building. The back door slid open and a few people slipped out of the vehicle, darting into the complex we were in.
I rose to my feet and looked over at her, seeing that she was on her feet and already getting her jacket on. I pocketed the gun and rushed out of the room, her following closely behind me.
The two of us sneaked our way down the hallway, down the back staircase, and outside where we slid into the vehicle we had parked by the landlord's quarters. Instinctively, I started the car up, but instead of shifting the vehicle into drive, I just sat there. I sat there, listening to my heart pound against my chest, watching the bursts of light coming from inside the apartment complex, accompanied by gun shots, and thinking about what we were going to do next. For months we'd hidden here, lived our lives...normally. I wasn't ready to go back to this kind of life. I was just getting used to the new one.
"Brendon!" She snapped at me, once again bringing me back to reality.
I slowly looked over at her.
"Drive!" She screamed at me.
