A bloodcurdling scream rang through the Byers house, it was 3:34 am and the commotion the scream caused could be heard from another country. Not a moment later Jonathon Byers appeared in the doorway of Will's dimly lit bedroom.
"Hey Buddy, you okay?" Jonathan called out, not really being able to see anything but complete darkness. Jonathan stood for a moment, praying for a reply and when it didn't come he breathed out heavily. "Will..?" His voice sounded a lot less confident now, it had become shaky and filled with a tone of concern. Swallowing heavily he slowly stepped into the darkness, almost being consumed by it.
He couldn't see a thing but surely enough he could hear the raspy breaths of a panicked and sleep deprived Will. "I'm here" Will's voice softly croaked out. Jonathan finally let out a sigh of relief. In moments like this wills voice provided such comfort for his overthinking mind. He looked towards the light switch quickly flicking it on, something he hadn't been able to bring himself to do before he knew Will was safe. Surely enough in the light there was Will, he had heavy bags around his eyes and was about as pale as a sheet. Jonathan hated seeing Will like this, he looked like he hadn't slept in months.
"I'm so glad you're okay Will" Jonathan spoke softly. Making his way over to his younger brothers bed "look at me" he spoke gently sitting down beside Will. Finally those familiar eyes shifted to his. From first glance you could see Will's exhaustion and it hit Jonathan then how long it had been since Will had last had a good nights sleep. His eyes had dark thick and heavy bags hanging under them, which provided a certain amount of shock to the boy. Before he'd been taken, Will never looked ill, he always looked like the healthiest of all of them though a little pale he usually looked well rested and bright however ever since his return, Jonathan had noticed the light that was once in his eyes seemed to have almost disappeared entirely. "Will.." Jonathan began, only to be quickly interrupted by their mother Joyce, who was now stood in the door way of her youngest sons room looking rather distressed and of course joined by their dog.
"Will honey" Joyce's soft voice echoed into the room, a tone of fear coming through "What's happened are you okay?" She spoke, stepping foot into the boys room and joining Jonathan on the side of Will's bed. Her eyes were soft as she looked down at the boy she adored and worried over, yet on closer inspection you could see the obvious hint of fear hiding in her eyes. Joyce reached out her shaky hand slowly taking a hold of Will's deadly cold hand, a look of shock hit her face as his hand touched hers however she soon chose to ignore this. Slowly their mother began rubbing circles on the back of the small boys hand taking hold of her older sons hand with the hand she had free.
Will eventually spoke up again, his voice a little groggy. "I'm okay.. I.. I had a -" He began getting cut of rather quickly by Jonathan who took over speaking, clearly seeing that Will was struggling a little.
"He had another nightmare. He's been having them since we got him back." Jonathan let himself say before letting his eyes drop to the floor and hanging his head. He knew his mother would not approve of the fact she hadn't been told of this. After all it was now almost January, almost two months since Will had been brought home. Jonathan didn't have to look up to know what his mother was thinking or feeling, it all became clear when she let out a sad and frustrated sigh.
"Why wasn't I told about this?" Was the only reply that came. Her voice well concerned and stern. Something the two boys weren't used to hearing. She didn't raise her voice at all, knowing that was not the way to earn her boys respect or to help them deal with their emotions. Joyce understood her children and she prided herself on how well she did so. So to find that her boys had been hiding something from her, well that shattered her a little. "Look boys" Joyce began. Trailing off for a second to look at the faces of the two people she loved most in the world. Her face slowly softened and she let out a frustrated sigh. What would she say. "I know I work late.. and sometimes I seem a little distant" She started, her eyes now falling to the floor, with either guilt or pain, it was hard to tell however she soon continued "But I love you both dearly, I wanted to be able to support this family the best I could an-"
Jonathan and Will wouldn't allow another word to come out of their mothers mouth, "You're not at fault.. I- We understand" Her eldest sons voice spoke softly as he and Will both began to hug their now fragile mother. Joyce began to shake her head. Only to be interrupted by the younger of the two now. Will hadn't spoke properly the entire time. So it almost came as a shock to both Jonathan and Joyce when his voice rang out, loud and clear. "Mom. You've done everything you could ever do for this family. We need no more." He began, his eyes locking with hers "Me and Jonathan appreciate it all" He continued, Jonathan giving a supportive and agreeing nod to his brother. "I asked Jonathan to keep it a secret.. He only found out because he heard me screaming one night" Will spoke, his voice trailing off towards the end of the sentence. The room fell silent, the three sat taking in everything until eventually Joyce looked at both her boys. Letting out a soft but forgiving sigh.
"I want both of you in my room tonight. We're going to talk and we can sleep when you're both eventually tired." She began, both boys let out a small chuckle but no protest came with that laugh because deep down both of her lovely sons knew that they wanted the three of them to be together that night. "No one is spending tonight alone" Joyce finally spoke again. This was followed by a nod in agreement from both Jonathan and Will before they all made their way into the hall and along slight into Joyce's room. The three huddled down into her Double bed, three in a two man bed wasn't really a squeeze for the Byers family after all Joyce was incredibly thin, Will was short and thin and Jonathan like his mother was very thin. The boys huddled themselves under their mothers duvet, both of them softly starting to sing 'Should I Stay or Should I go' by 'The Clash' as their mother let out a soft laugh. The three probably stayed like for another hour or so until eventually everyone, including their dog, had drifted off to a hopefully peaceful nights sleep.
