Loneliness is something Zara has tried to combat and cope with for as long as she can remember. Forever. When she was younger, she was hopeful, however, as time passed, her hopefulness had turned into hopelessness. She sat in her room and looked out the window.
She does this a lot.
Nothing ever changes though, she just stares at the same old rusted sign that once said "Callahan's Boys and Girls Orphanage".
Now it says "Cowlahan's oys and Gi ls Or age." Someone had wrote in Cow with spray paint a couple of weeks ago and the nickname has stuck ever since, the Professor isn't aware of her beloved nickname, and the children would like to keep it that way.Zara hated the word children, she has always been referred as a child even though she will be seventeen in June. I have been here almost seventeen years and I still have no seniority, she angrily states to herself.
Zara was dozing off with books all over her bed and torn up paper when the bell rang. What an obnoxious bell, she thought, then remembered it was the lunch bell! "How had I not realized it was already 12:00?" She questioned to herself.
Going down the hall was much simpler this time around. However, it felt eerie even though there were others all around her laughing and going at it. She got to the bottom of the steps on the first floor and checked one more time around the stairs to see if the books magically returned. They hadn't.
The dining room was full by the time Zara had gotten there. This was a normal occurrence because of how small the dining room was and the lack of enough seats compared to the amount of people living there. All the good food was gone too, typical. She got her stale roll and chunky mashed potatoes with a strange looking chicken wrap and went on her way.
Just as she sat down on the ground of her room with her food, she realized she had forgotten her drink. "Ughhh!" She whined.
Today is not my day, she thought as she walks back down the less crowded, creaky hall. She makes her way down the stairs, and checks once more at the bookcase, and still, no books were to be found.
The dining room was still crowded, but little by little, as she passed by all the tables and made her way to where the leftover beverages were. She looked back at the crowded tables at all of the faces, laughing and smiling. There were some free spaces at some tables, she thought, maybe I could sit with actual people and not just by myself in that closet of a room. Just as her thought has passed, she glances to a dark corner by the nasty milk she's never noticed before."STOP!" His voice was muffled from the hands of Professor Cowlahan.
"I don't have it!" It was the new boy.
What didn't he have, she thought worriedly.
"Shut up. Why were you hiding your belongings when we came to search your room. You are hiding something! We will find out and take back what should be rightfully ours." Cowlahan said so sternly, it sounded like a completely different person.
Cowlahan turned around, and spotted Zara watching."What are you doing here? Get out!"
Zara stumbled back and ran to her room terrified, what had happened back there? Her thoughts were rambling as she tried to regain her composure and figure out what just happened. As she did she remembered just before what happened, "So much for making new friends... and getting a drink," she spoke to herself.Author's Note
